My neutral safety switch went bad ( not shift interrupter switch ). It's intermittent on an ohm meter causing boat not to start. Jump it and it runs, hook it back up and no go. Obviously bad. 1980 Bayliner Eagle 350/ 260 Mercruiser. Question is, Have the switches used over the years been pretty common ? or has every manufacturer used something different. Going to dealer Monday hoping to find the switch, just looking for a possible answer and hoping to not have to buy a new shift control. Don????????

Re: neutral safety

The neutral safety switch is just a little micro switch attached to the shifter. The yellow/red striped wire that goes to your start sol. is interrupted when the shift lever is in gear. They are mostly the same, but not all the same. You will either have to order one for your shifter model, or remove yours and take it to an electric supply store to compare it to a replacement.
