neutral saftey swicth

No start as in the starter won't function, same as trying to start with the control in gear.

What's happening when you try to start her up?

Hey buddy welcome back. It acts like its not getting gas. I changed fuel pump and fuel line and theirs gas going to the carb. It cranks but will not start.If I pour gas in carb she starts so theirs spark.
I recently reupolstered my side panels and disengaged or disconnected the throtll and just wondering if maybe I messed up the wireing to the saftey swicth.

Since it's cranking, it's not the neutral safety switch. Sounds more like the kill switch, but this says otherwise.

I think you still have a fuel problem. Pull off the fuel line at the carb and put the end into a container, crank the motor to see if fuel is coming out of the line. Be careful so gas isn't spewing.

If you get gas, then the float may be sticking closed which would explain starting with gas poured in the carb.

I did pull the line at the carb and it is pumping gas. I'm thinking only thing left is the carb itself? Thanks for the help.

If it pumps gas and it runs when gas is sent down the throttle, you're right it's a carburetor issue.
Start by checking the filter at the carb entry. If that's good check the float. The float needs to be very precisely set and it can't be fuel soaked.
While doing the float see if there's crap in the fuel seat or if the needle is sticky.
If there's nothing found at that point it's time to go through the carburetor.
While it's apart do the fuel supply check, pour out the contents of the separator to a container and let it settle. You need to be sure the gas is good so you only fix things once.

Reading the comments, sounds like it is time to buy a carb kit and remove, disassemble, clean and install a new carb kit. I think that will solve your problems... JMHO!

I pulled the top of carb and it is nasty in their. The float is stuck and I am just going to replace the entire carb.
I have a 4.3 merc, boat is a 88, Ilooked at carbs on line and dont know witch one is the correct one. I have never messed with carbs, Iknow nothing at all about them.How do I know if it has an eletric choke?

Get an Edelbrock 1406 and the V6 kit. It has an electric choke, which is easy to wire. Even if your old carb was not electric choke it's the way to go.

Your motor is the same year and HP as mine so I would think it has the old bi-metal choke not the newer electronic one which has a sensor which bolts onto an intake bolt, grounds and then has one wire to the + on the coil. Is your carb a Rochester part number 17084516?

Waterman, my carb number is 17057298. Is it worth trying to rebuild it if its that bad?
I found a carb kit and new float but cant find the black piece the float attaches too. Mine is cracked. Do you guys know what that piece is called?
If I go new, I will order what you suggested NHguy,

It looks like the float arm comes with the new float, you can always call them and find out for sure. Kit costs like 35 bucks and could work for another 30 years, or not. :lol:

I haven't seen a carb YET that was so bad that it needed replaced. If you can post some pictures we can see what you are seeing and dealing with and make better suggestions as well. But buying a good quality carb kit and disassembling your carb, cleaning it with carb cleaner and sprays and installing the carb kit parts, is going to be the easy cheapest route to a good running engine again... JMHO!

The main things that make them throwaways are. (Not in any particular order.) Broken and corroded castings, worn out shaft entry points that allow air leaks, person that doesn't have enough time to spend reconditioning. You can do bushings on leaky shaft openings.
I bought a book and did my Rochester a couple of years ago. The good part is I know what happened, and the boat runs perfectly. The bad part, I spent a lot of time. The really bad part, I got rid of that boat!

Thanks guys, I took the carb off today and started cleaning it with carb cleaner. Their looks like four long peices that looks like gas shoots out, are theese the jets??
They looked to be gumed up so I will clean them and any little holes I can get with a tiny piece of wire. Not a whole lot to the carb.
Waterman thank you but the piece I am looking for goes behind the float, maybe it holds the float in place. I found a float kit and ordered it then I received an E- mail saying they disc the kit and they will refund me the money. It had that piece in it.
Thanks again guys, I am pretty sure I can clean it up enough and make it run again. I would not of even of tried if you guys were not on here. SO I will keep looking for the part and keep cleaning.

Cool, Thanks Waterman. I got a diagram for my carb and the piece is called a filler block. Hopefully I can find one now that I know what it is called.
