HI
I TOOK MY BOAT OUT THIS MORNING AND AFTER SOME TIME ON THE WATER I THREW THE ANCHOR TO CHILL AT THE BEACH. WHEN I RETURNED AND TRIED TO CRANK THE BOAT, NOTHING HAPPENED. I FIGURED IT WAS PROBABLY SOMETHING WITH THE NEUTRAL SAFTEY SWITCH SO I TOOK THE ENGINE COVER OFF OF MY 88 WELLCRAFT 4 CYLINDER AND MESSED WITH THE THROTTLE LINKAGE AND GOT THE BOAT TO START. IT SEEMS I HAD TO GET THE LINKAGE IN JUST THE RIGHT SPOT FOR THE ENGINE TO TURN OVER. DOES THIS NEED TO BE ADJUSTED OR WHAT NEEDS TO HAPPEN? ALSO, I'M NOT SURE IF THIS IS RELATED BUT WHEN I GOT BACK TO THE RAMP AND LOADED MY BOAT, I TURNED OFF THE IGNITION AND THE ENGINE DIDN'T TURN OFF. WHAT IS GOING ON. IS THIS RELATED OR DID I GET HIT WITH TWO THINGS AT ONCE. PLEASE HELP.
JOHN

Re: Neutral Saftey Switch Problem?

Sounds like you may have a bad ignition switch, I replaced the key switch on my 1990 Wellcraft due to 'no crank issues' and also replace the Key switch on my dads 1988 Wellcraft because it would stick in the start position , both these switches were made of plastic, so I replaced them with brass cased ones.

i thought i might also add that i previously had to push the button in to engage the prop into forward and reverse and now that is not the case. is this a sign that something is out of adjustment. i'm not talking about the button on the bottom of the handle to rev the boat up, i'm talking about the long button on top of the handle to engage the prop.
john

Re: Neutral Saftey Switch Problem?

i just took the handle apart and found that a plastic piece in the handle that i believe catches and releases the long metal rod that goes down into the handle unit is broken. i think that is why the button is inoperative and i don't have to push it in to engage forward and reverse. could this be a problem in determining why it won't start when in neutral position. is it not truly locking out in the neutral position. i also took off the engine cover and there is part of the throttle unit mounted above the valve cover that has two seperate adjustment rods. they have play in them and when i move them to the right spot, i can get the boat to start. is this what is out of adjustment. sorry for the problem. just a novice.

Hi JOHN,
It Sounds like you've got Several Issues going on with your Forward Controls.....
I'm Thinking they're All connected.......

You'll Probably need a new set of controls,+ a Multi-meter to Find + Repair it........
just a novice.
It can be Quite Involved...................... ;)
