Hello

1979 2450 AMF Crestliner Mercruiser 228 (305)
I have a top mounted control box that controls both throttle and shift. It has a pull out knob that works the saftey switch. (Boat cant be started unless the nob is pulled out, can only pull out nob in neutral)
Two small screws that hold the shift cable to the arm keep comming loose. I tried everything to make them fast. replaced them, lock washer, glue, but they keep comming loose and when they do the boat wont shift (very bad when docking) The control also looks rusty and beat up. I would like to replace it. My friend gave me a brand new two lever top mount. One for shifting and one for throttle. Problem is there is no saftey. Boat will start in gear.
Can I install some other type of neutral saftey switch? and if so where do I put it?
These boxes are very expensive so if I can use this one I would sure like to.
Thanks for any ideas.

Re: Neutral Saftey switch

Sure you need a micro switch with a lever. then you need to make a notch on the inside part of the gear lever. bolt the switch in so the notch and the lever are at the same spot when the lever is in neutral position.. You need a micro switch that has noth a Normally open and normally closed and a comon pin. If you need a switch and cant find it let me know. i pull them off Fire alarm systems all day long. i can jsut drop one in the mail.
