I'm on the market for a new center console with 150HP outboard. After lurking at this BB for a few months I've decided to buy a 4 stroke. I was disappointed to find the brand choices limited. Only Yamaha made a 150 4 stroke in 2003, and it was a new model. I hoped to have a choice. I see at some Honda dealer web sites a 150 Honda listed. There is no info about it at the Honda web site other than a 150 is included in the boat show promo that's running.

Is the 150 Honda a new model in 2004?

What has been Hondas track record with new model introductions? Do they have a history of reliable first year introductions?

What are the details? Is it a completely new model or a "suped up" 130?

Thanks in advance guys.

Re: New 150HP model?

the 150 Honda motor is based on one of their auto engines(Accord)...it develops 160 hp at 6100 rpms and it likes to run long periods in the high rpm range...I think it may well be named the motor of the year

Yamaha F150
Honda BF150
Suzuki DF140/Johnson 140 4-stroke

That is the 140-150 hp 4-strokes You can chose today.

Yamaha F150 has largest displacement, 2670 cc. Honda BF150 2354 cc, Suzuki DF140 2044.
That can tell some about the force it can develop.

Suzuki has longest warranty (if You buy before March 31), 6 year. Yamaha have similar offer but 5 year. I do not know what Honda has to offer in (free) extended warranty.

Heaviest is Honda 478 lb(217 kg), next Yamaha F150, 466 lb(212 kg), and lightest is Suzuki DF140 with only 407 lb (186 kg).

Most expensive is Honda BF150, then Yamaha F150 and rather much less expensive is Suzuki DF140 (at least in my country).

What exact boat model do You intend to use?

Yamaha F150 is probably hard to beat if You consider performance, warranty, price and Yamaha proven customer satisfaction. But all of above is very fine outboards. Suzuki DF140 has been on the market longest, since 2002. Honda BF150 is new for 2004 (completely new model). Yamaha F150 came late 2003 I belive but is considered new for 2004 also.

Do I have a Yamaha myself? Yes, F115 4-stroke (2003) but I could as well have choosen a similar Suzuki (but not Honda because it is to heavy for my boat) or Mercury.
Buy what You can afford, and buy from a dealer You trust and You know can take care of your outboard when needed. Long warranty is also very important for me, maybe for you also? (I have 5 year warranty on my outboard.)

Re: New 150HP model?

I am going to buy a 20-21 foot RIB. Either a Zodiac Pro 650 or an Aquasport. Big RIBS are not very popular here in the US so they are a little hard to find. I am a race officer and have two junior sailors who we chase at regattas around Lake Erie so we need excellent trailer ability. A little waterskiing and some trips to other yacht clubs in the area for dinner make it the right choice for us.

The 150 is a great size and will give really strong performance. The Yamaha sounds like a good product. I think the Honda could be also. There are not any/many Suzuki dealers in my area. Certainly none that can take care of a big HP engine like this.

hello
yes buy something that you can gets parts and service locally. we get it all the time where someone bought motor X off the net and got it below dealer only to need a warrenty service and not have a boat for 3 months. some dealers get a bit jiggy like that. I dont blame them. they have to do it but can take their time about it. the yamaha is my choice with the suzuki a close second. here hondas corrode to fast in our brine. but that is what is nice about saltwater. all of them last 6 years or so before making the journey to the melting pot. as far as 150 being a "large" horsepower its kinda on the low end of what I normally service:).
good luck and keep posting

Re: 150 not so big

Rodbolt,

But then anybody who lurks at iBoats knows you are an unusual guy! :D I always look for your comments.

Around here it seems like you can get anyone to service a 5-9.9HP outboard of any type. Some really good people too.

I had the unfortunate experience of trying to get service on a set of 10 year old used Evinrude 235 in early Summer. The list of dealers that could service them was really short. The list of dealers that would service them was nonexistent.

Maybe there are more qualified big engine service guys in your area.

JB might be upset with me, but I intend to buy from a local dealer with service for the engine and resist the low internet prices. There is nothing like being able to say "I bought it from you, how are you going to help me?" when you have a problem.

Now, the rest of the stuff, VHF, GPS, covers...the gloves are off, bring on the internet.

I have the 150 Honda. Very nicely built unit. 18Lb. lighter than the Old 130 Honda. Looks and runs good. As for long term, who know's ? Except Honda has a pretty good reputation.

Don't hesitate to go with the Honda, I own two Honda 130s and they are the best. Also Honda stands behind their product 100%. Check out the replies to how Honda problems are handled in this website. Honda owner forever!

I looked at all three motors.

Suzuki DF140
Yamaha 150
Honda BF150

First, I'm lucky enough to have very close service centers for all 3 manufacturers. I live in Gloucester, Mass. & it's a real salty town. Anyway, I was really leaning close to the Suzuki DF140 @ $9,000 rigged, plus the 6 each warranty. But, a lot of it's HP comes from the 5500-6200 RPM range. It has a fairly small block & looks like it's a modified DF115. I just felt like I would have to push the engine to squeeze that 140 horses.

I went with the Honda for a couple of reasons. I always wanted a "Honda" & the dealer I bought my boat from is a Honda dealer. It was just easier this way. Honda does have a 3 year warranty but it's a "no hassle warranty" Anything wrong? No problems. Ny friend bought a Suzuki DF115 & had issues (nothing major) & it was some what difficult for Suzuki to honor their warranty, He finally had Sukuzi repair & pay for the problem.

The Yamaha looked very attractive to me because of it's weight & CC's. But, at the time the Yamaha Four Stroke 150 was allocated until the end of Feburary 04'. Back then, I needed to take a loan out for everything, on the spot. So, I had to pass on the Yamaha.

I'm glad I bought the Honda even though I haven't even used her yet. Just ask any Honda Accord owner if they like ther car & you'll get a positive response. The only drawback? The price tag @ $12,990.00 (that's what I paid) Also, from what I understand the BF150 has been in production for over 2 years now in Japan. US, Europe & Australia are receiving the engines this year. Mine is already rigged on my transom @ the factory in New Hampshire.

The choice is yours!

Regards,

Alex

Techs/dealers like this are the one's to stay away from.

If a dealer won't service, or discriminates how they service your outboard because you didn't buy it from them, then you need to report this practice to the factory, or someone at corporate. Furthermore, if your warranty-covered outboard is out of service for an unreasoable time, you can take immediate legal action.

You purchased the warranty inclusive to your outboard with no stipulations on what authorized shop would make warranty repairs, and no stipulation that you would be discriminated upon because of where you made the purchase.

And don't ever let a shop tell you that they don't make money on warranty repairs.

My advice is to give your local dealer a shot at beating the other price you've found. Show him some evidence that the price is for real. If he can't possibly beat it, then cut him a couple hundred dollars slack, and purchase it through him anyway.

Otherwise, let him know you gave him the chance, and you will be saving your hard-earned money by making the purchase elsewhere. Let him know that you expect him to uphold the factory warranty without discrimination.

I encourage everyone to be a frugal shopper. Use the money you save to take your kids fishing. ;)

Re: New 150HP model?

I could not agree more with the last post. I will not buy locally and pay 2-3000 more for an outboard just to pacify a dealer. That is crap. If their prices can compete then yes but if I can drive 300 miles and buy X outboard for 3K less than the local dealer wants, thats what I will do. When it comes time for service, the local dealer will get it.
