New 16 aluminum! Starcraft - Springbok?

So I have spent quite a bit of time going through all the starcraft rebuild threads and I have a question!

I recently picked up my first boat. It is a 1982 Springbok by Alcan? Also found a sticker inside that says "marlin 16".

But from looking at the SS16 rebuild threads my boat is exactly the same as a starcraft ss 16. Just a different name?

Are these two companys the same? Were they ever connected?

Either way I look forward to rebuilding it like so many of you have!

Here's the boat, picked it up for $1000, not sure what most guys pay for them. It has been sitting in a field for a couple years uncovered so the interior is garbage, so I look forward to doing a complete resto. Got some muffs and a new battery and fired the 1982 evinrude 115 up first turn, and everything sounds good!

Cheers Kyle.

i'll be the first to reveal my stupidity. i'd swear that not only is an SS, but that two color logo on the side is a Starcraft stylized "S". where'd you get the make info? title? capacity plate?

price is not too far out of the ballpark for a good hull with good motor but needing gutting. many get em cheaper but that depends heavily on where you are.

Are you in Canada???? Springbok later changed their name to Princecraft and still manufactures boats in Canada.

the boat / motor / trailer look barn-kept...hard to believe it was out in the elements for several years. Nice find...whatever it is! :thumb:

You'll be SCREAMING down the lake with that 115 on the back!

Hahaha I know! The resemblance is uncanny. The Name plate does say Alcan Marlin 16 though :D The only thing I can think of is that the startcraft ss was such a great boat they had to make a carbon copy.

I found this on another thread, new model but same idea.

Yes, I am in British Columbia Canada. Thanks for the info! Good to know.

Thanks! I'm excited to take it for a test run, big motor for a little boat!

Any outboard experts on here? Is a 1982 evinrude 115 a good motor, don't know much about the older stuff since it was made 10 years before I was born :D

Welcome kb, great looking boat you have there. The v4 Evinrudes and Johnsons are great motors, keep it tuned up good fresh fuel with some Seafoam in it, make sure there are no air leaks in the fuel line and they will last forever. What HP is your boat rated for? I know the later model 16SS Starcrafts were rated for 90hp and the early ones 85hp.

Great find and I think you got a super deal there!

Man, that boat looks a whole lot like a Sea Nymph to me. Sea Nymph and Starcraft had links back in the day...

It looks good for a 1982! It should be a great boat again!

I'm running an '81 Evinrude 90. It's much uglier than yours but runs like a top. Pushes my 18' close to 40MPH so yours is going to haul butt. Great motors, you have to actively try to kill them, they don't die on their own. Parts support is still excellent.

it may have been made before you were born but i bet it has less hours on it than you do........what EZ said. excellent motors. one chronic issue as with most OMCs of that vintage is the CDI ignitor occasionally going out...i carry a spare on back country trips

If you've got OB problems, start a Evinrude 115 thread over in the JohnnyRude forum:
Johnson & Evinrude Outboards

Plenty of good folks hanging around that garage.

Re: New 16 aluminum! Starcraft - Springbok?

Thanks! I had a look at the plate and it says 105hp, so she's a bit bigger than what it's rated for, as far as I know it is the original motor that was on the baot?

i'm still kind of scratching my head over why a Canadian boat company would name their product after a South African desert antelope:confused:

and then a springbok Marlin? have we gone to the Isle of Dr. Moreau?

I wouldn't sweat it. 90+ horsepower is typically 4 cylinder territory as is your 115. You don't have to use all the throttle ;)

Where abouts in BC are you? For $1K that's a great price. I never ran across anything that good of a deal when I was looking (still look). Looks like my SS160, with a bit of a splash well modification which I might do to mine.

Nice grab kb. My boat was very rough with an '89 evinrude on the back and I bought it for 1500. I'm in Michigan and cost of living is a bit lower here so I think you got a great deal.

Re: New 16 aluminum! Starcraft - Springbok?

I'm up in Dawson Creek. The boat is from Alberta. Fishing isnt the best here with a limited number of lakes, but we have a pretty diverse fishery.

Lakes with jackfish Perch and Walleye, another lake with rainbows and brooktrout, other lakes with lake trout and bull trout, and I'd like to get down to the island to do a little coho fishing at Nootka . (have family on the island and have fished there several times, brother worked out of a lodge in ukee too)

So this boat is going to be jack of all trades, downriggers, casting seat up front etc. should be fun!
