I spent most of this past weekend trying to educate myself about the Force motor. Thanks to this bulletin board I've learned alot. Thanks to any/all of you who have taken the time to comment about Force motors. It surely helps a novice like me.

Here's my situation and opportunity. We bought a refurbished 1970 16ft Chrysler ski boat last year with a 135hp Merc. The motor is about the same age. The motor was well taken care of but is just too old and hard to come by parts. We love the boat. The guy was a body repairman and did a detailed job on the refurbish.

I just came across a 1999 Force 90hp at a dealership. It's new and will carry a one year warranty. $4500 mounted to my boat, with new controls. NADA shows a used 1999 Force coming in around $3000.

From what I've been reading from you folks is that the Force motor should be alright as long as a person makes sure to maintain it annually.

Do you think it would be a wise decision purchasing this motor, or look for a used Merc/Evinrude/Yamaha etc? (I'm not so sure we're ready to shell out $5,000-$7,000 for a new non-Force motor.)

Any ideas what kind of speed and/or power I would get out of it. I have no idea what the boat weighs (600-1000lbs??). It's 16ft fiberglass, 4 seats. We like to ski and tube, and I would hate to be under powered.

90 HP Force probably too small for hauling 4 people and /or towing. 4500$ is pretty steep also. If you can wait till it gets cooler and later towards the year end you can generally scoop up a good deal on a larger MERCURY(sorry , my favorite..)or some other brand X motor.

I am a Force owner. I was like you when I purchased it. It was a good deal and the dealer told me that Force was easy to work on and would be ok as long as it was maintained. I have not had any problems yet, but it is hard to find parts for. If I could go back and do it over again I would have purchased a different brand motor. Price is not everything and if I'm right your horsepower is rated at the powerhead not the prop, so you probably would have a 70-80 hp motor in another brand.

Yea I know about getting parts from Merc but at twice the cost of other shops. If in desperation I could buy from Merc. Just another issue against Force. :(

I have a 1996 force on bayliner 1600 ls and it runs about 35 mph with 4 people on board .and as far as finding parts you can get them at dolleroffshore.com. Or if you want you can check out the 1997 90 hp merc for 4000 at iboats helpfull links.

I've been waiting for a water pump gasket and outlet tube seal for a 1996 Force from mercurymarine for over a month now. These should be a fairly common item to get....

Great decision. I don't think you will be sorry. The Merc is a better motor.
:)
