i recently bought a 14' 1986 bayliner capri, that recently had a massive heart attack(engine expolded). a "friend" has a volvo car with the same engine in it that has been sitting for years. But the @$$hole wont sell it to me. he would rather watch it rust than see someone use it. So I've been on the search for a new motor with no luck. SO Ijust bought another 1986 bayliner capri 18' with 175 force outboard. there's a little rot around the ski locker, and the upholstery is shot. so I'm back where I started, at least this engine runs and is replacable. Ill be posting pics soon

By replaceable, do you mean swapping motors, or doing repairs. B/C doing repairs is a LOT more difficult on a Force than you may think...they've been out of business for quite a while now.

I've had Lego sets that were more difficult than working on my Force. Would I do a full teardown and rebuild including machine work on one? No. Would I put gaskets, seals, carb kit, tune up, etc... on one with good compression? Sure.

Including a set of Boyesen reeds and a pair of Pertronix 3 ohm coils, I put $200 into new seals, gaskets, points/condensers, impeller, thermostat, etc.. into my '87 50. None of the parts were hard to find. None of the repairs were any more difficult than changing the oil on my lawn mower.

It's too bad the 50 is underpowered for my boat because it runs fantastic. It will be a nice motor for someone when I upgrade to a larger outboard.

by replacable I mean that if this turns out to be junk I can put another outboard on it. for what I have in this boat a little more investment would be worthwhile i think. If I can sell the other one in my yard I will be able to make this one great! if anyone has any info on the force 175 outboards please pass it along. I like to know as much as I can in case I have to work on it. A parts dealer would be a great start. hopefully it will be at least next season before I will need them.

Re: new 2 me bayliner

I used Crowley's and eBay to source my engine parts. Unless you are confident of the history you will need to at least run through the carbs, change/inspect the gear oil, and replace the impeller on that 175. When you order the impeller make sure to order some lower unit drain/vent seals. Order several of the little seals. They are one time use and very inexpensive. Handy to have some around even if it's for your buddy who doesn't plan ahead. If one of the carbs is running lean due to a blockage or improper tune you can fry a cylinder. This advice applies to all 2 stroke outboards, not just Force.

thanks for the advice. great info. I need to obtain a repair manual for this engine. and how do you acess the impeller? from what I see it must be inside the motor. I'm getting ready to put her on the water. wish me luck. Pics are coming soon
