Does anyone know when that new technology they have on the 150 Yamaha 2 stroke for example will make its way to the smaller HP motors like the 90 hp.... I really want to switch back to a 2 stroke but would like to have the new technology for fuel economy etc.....and to meet new emission standards

"New technology"? Are you referring to computer controlled DFI?

Computer controlled DFI is currently available in several other makes, most notably the Evinrude E-Tec, in the 90hp niche.

Re: New 2 stroke technology

I guess that is what I mean. I heard that there was new technology out there which made 2 strokes more effecient and met the 2006 emmission standards. When I went to the Yamaha web site (my preferable outboard to date) I saw they have it only for 150 Hp and up....Have not owned an Evinrude or Johnson for about 20 years and am surprised they are leading the Japanese in this technology for the smaller HPs....

E-tec from Evinrude
TLDi from Tohatsu
Optimax from Mercury

are all so called new technology.

E-tec is the newest kid on the block, and Optimax (or Optipop because they had lots of problems when first brough out) is the oldest.

I would advise you to get a ride (or at least a listen to down the quay) before you choose.

In the present dat form I would say all 3 are great engines.

That's Interesting.... E-Tec is the newest, Optimax is the oldest....

I didn't know that, but its all starting to come together...

OptiMax is the oldest, so obviously they were innovative and build on the technology, so OBVIOUSLY they would have had more problems because they were working on new grounds, untested waters. But they seam to be all fixed now, yet everyone loves to down Mercury and make comments like "Optipop" or "OptiBomb".

Yet E-tec is new, and really unproven yet, and everyone around here is praising the bloody hell out of them.. That's just amazing.

-TheChad

Re: New 2 stroke technology

Bombardier learned a lot from the failures of OptiMax and Ficht before designing the E-Tec. It is an advanced second generation DFI engine that avoids the errors of the early pioneers of the technology.

I probably bash the early Ficht engines many times more than the OptiMax, but remain a JohnnyRude lover.

People who have E-Tecs don't consider it unproven technology. They rave about it, not at it.

Well, at this point the e-tec is not new anymore. I've had my 50 HP for about a year and others have had them longer. I also heard there was real testing done BEFORE they were released.

So far I've not heard of any blowups like the earlier DIs. they seem to be the real deal.

Having said that, mine is in the shop as I write. The starter came loose and would not engage the flywheel. It seems like a minor problem. At least I hope so!

I have heard (nothing to truly back this up) that Yamaha will become a 4 stroke company except for existing high hp HPDI engines. I hope they don't but time will tell.
