I have a 1980 3.0L OMC Stringer drive so at boat shows I often ask whats out there as a good replacement.

I got the normal reply of Vovo or Merc but he also added that next year the Cost of the 3.0L Engine will nearly DOUBLE.

He went on to say that the new engines are going to be required to have Catilic Converters and it will nearley double the cost of the 3.0L engines.

I failed to ask it this only for California or the whole country.

Has anyone else herd of this??

I just found this.
An important series of saltwater tests of catalytic converters in marine engines will go ahead as planned this summer, after the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the California Air Resources Board (CARB) agreed to fund in-water tests. As reported in the May issue of BoatU.S. Magazine, CARB was attempting to issue new rules requiring catalytic converters on all gasoline sterndrive and inboard engines without testing the safety or reliability of the converters when in contact with saltwater.

Because the EPA often adopts nationally the CARB rules for California, a new standard for gasoline engines without adequate testing was strongly objected to on safety grounds by the U.S. Coast Guard and marine manufacturers. The EPA is expected to publish proposed regulations on carbon monoxide (CO) in marine engines later this year.

Catalytic converters have been pushed as on way to reduce CO on boats, a known hazard. So far they have worked well in testing of marine generators.

That's the problem with boat shows. You don't know who you're talking to. Could be someone hired to work the show. Never the technical level you would like to see..
