I've just taken delivery of an '02 240 Horizon. I love the boat, but the speedometer is very jumpy under 30 mph. Since this is the speed at which most water sports are, I'd like to know if there is anything that can be done either by the dealer or myself to correct this. I'd rather not swap the speedo with a different model that won't match. It is a separate gauge, not part of a gauge cluster. It has a pitot tube not a paddle wheel. Thanks in advance for the help.

JJR

Sound's pretty typical of a pi-tot tube speedometer. Old technology.

You could do what I do and just occasionally glare in disgust, at this waste of dash space, then read the MPH, accurate to the tenths, on my cheapie GPS.

Marty

John,
As Marty states, those speedometers(especially pitot type)can be highly inaccurate. The guage makes nice eye candy when your running flat out  The best(and most accurate) speedometer to date is the GPS.

Check the pitot tube isnt filled with something (wax, paint, or perhaps a bit o' the log you ran over last night).

Aside from that, the gentlemen above are correct, go the GPS route. The odds you can find a replacement speedo that will match are about as high as my wife allowing me to buy a new, bigger boat this year (Almost nil).
