Mercury sells New and Remanufactured Motors. At the very least, they will provide an Engine that is built correctly for Marine Use.

Michigan motorz was good for me six years ago when I repowered. I bought a partial engine package which was a new base engine plus intake carb and ignition. Yes the new base engines are new same engine merc and Volvo would use to build it’s complete engines.

It was more money for new but now on my seventh summer trouble Free was the way to go

Buying a partial and swapping accessories wiring etc over saved me like 1500-2$k back then was a nice option if you can spin a wrench

Merc also offers new and really honest to god properly remanufactured engines. If you don’t want to get your hands dirty and have the $$$ these come with a multi year warranty available at any merc dealer and is a good way for the less value conscious

Ayuh,..... Go for the '96, 'n up motor, 'n buy the vortec intake to match,.....

If yer replacin' the motor, this is an honest 20/ 30 hp over the '87 to '96 motors,....

Get the Intake from Mercury, or Volvo. They do use intakes that handle the Marine environment better than an Aluminium Automotive Intake.

In a 24 footer I would definitely be considering a stroker. Pull the current 5.7 and kit it. A few more ponies at the top, but a veritable circus load of torques in the midrange... I find it 'quite interesting' that we don't see more 383s in boats. They have all the things you want in a boat engine....

I belive everything but intake would fit Incl carb and delco est exhaust coupler flywheel etc

You might run into pulley alignment issues but nothing that would stop me from doing it.

Edelbrock marine and Volvo manifolds come out of the same Barr casting boxes. Both available with dual alloy.

One says Edelbrock, one says Volvo

Can't say for quality of michigan but ime snj is unreliable. Had two issues with the reman failing after short hours, both swaps performed well. One was aerated block due to rod cap bolt failure, other one was broken head of exhaust valve. Both times snj denied build quality and proposed far fetched issues regarding failures.

Merc does have a fantastic support for quality new/reman long blocks up to complete sterndrive/inboard packages. Availability may vary however

I'm running a non-marine Performa. No problem in clean 'sweet' water of Idaho. Cannot speak to Lake Ontario.

There is an epoxy coating that some people have run . However I have had galvanic corrosion with some of the high mineral content fresh water.
