I purchased a new 22 ft Crest pontoon boat with a 90 hp Johnson 2 stroke engine in August 2000. I've maybe had it on the water 4 hours since I've had it - the shop has had it the rest of the time. The boat runs fine for about 30-35 minutes, then loses power and quits. They say they've checked just about everything from fuel system to power pack and still it only runs for about 30-35 minutes. Has anyone else had the same or similar problem? Suggestions?

Ahoy, Coy.

They haven't checked everything, or they overlooked the cause of your trouble.

What happens if you:

1. Squeeze your primer bulb when it starts to lose power?

2. Spray some fuel mix into the carbs when it starts to lose power?

3. Take the bonnet off the engine to cool the electronics when it starts to lose power?

4. Hook the engine up to a portable tank, bypassing your regular tank and filter?

5. Crank it up with the bonnet off and heat the electronics (ignition) components with a hair dryer?

After it has lost power and quit, how long do you have to wait until it will crank up again?

It clearly takes 30-40 minutes to either starve itself of fuel or get some electrical component hot enough to fail.

Diagnosis must be done when it is misbehaving. If it aint broke you can't fix it, so make it break.

Let us know what you find. We, and you, can find the trouble. Then let the dealer wrenches fix it.

:)

Some of the engines had metal trash in the carbuators from the factory, on factory rigged boats. The ignition coils arc to metal plate between coils and power pack. Item 5 on JBs list would be my first choice.
