Hi guys, lurker and new to posting, great site! Name is fil, living in Austin now, had my 22 ft cuddy all over the country and love it!

Specimen: 86 5.7 ltr Mercruiser Alpha One gen 1. O/D S/N oa664624.
Scenario: New Sterndrive Engineering Lower unit replaced after low level lake claimed my old one.

New to boat repair, but not to mechanics. Built my share of chops, bobs, and all around fast machines. Entire unit has one season on new everything (gimbal, ujoints, bellows, etc done by boat mechanic then stored for a few years). Doing my own repairs from now on. Brand new unit went on easy enough, but have some issues.

1). Gear oil out of the weep over night. Ensured the o-ring between halves is in place. I'm suspect of the 2 seals in the upper drive shaft (?), so would like to replace them. Other ideas there? No way to do it without removing the upper unit?

2) Shift shaft: feels and sounds sloppy. Also a drop of oil there on the nut below it. Suspect shift shaft bushing. Shifts fine, but again, sloppy and noisy. Any other ideas there? Again, best to remove the upper right?

Bought the Clymer manual, good general info, not specific enough in some areas. Any suggestions, necessary tools, and advice would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks and happy boating!!

Go to the adults only and download the manual #6 for your drive.5 years , it should have had a upper re-seal job.

Thanks Doc. I'd read the Adults only where it stated Merc. had killed manuals, so ASSumed it not there. Got it now and reading. Looks like I'll be going in deeper...

Any other input for a first timer appreciated

A strike to take out a lower unit most likely did "shock damage" to the upper components all the way to the coupler. Just dont be surprised to develop a problem in the upper
