I just installed new Ball Gears in a 1984 5.7L OMC (800 Stringer?). Took the boat (1984 Kayot Deckboat K200) to the river. After about 5 hours in the water I took it home and noticed my Ball Gears have a slight warn area on them. (Tilt was all the way down I made sure of that). Is this normal wear are should I be concerned. Had other Carb. problems which had me going in and out of gear more than normal.

As you probably know, ball gears are junk when 50% gone.
We cannot judge slight wear without a picture.
In 5 hours of use, nothing should be gone but the paint on the gears.

DHP

When you mounted the drive, did you tighten down the end caps before the trunion cap bolts? That centers the drive.

The only other thing I can think is maybe you did not get one seated all the way on the shaft during installation.

I'll try to take a picture and put it in a reply.

A timely tip KaGee. I'm going to hang my drive tomorrow. :)

Excuse my ignorance. Where are the end caps and trunion cap bolts? Checked index in my manual with no reference to trunion cap.

Trunion caps are the 1/2 round pieces that hold the drive to the boat (internediate housing).
End caps are bolted on the sides at this point, with 4 bolts on each side.

DHP
