I just purchased a 1986 bayliner capri with a force 125 ob. this make my 2nd 86 bayliner this year. I am determined to be on the water this summer!!! the first bayliner's engine exploded (pics in another thread) a "friend" has the engine I need to repair it, but he dosent see fit for me to have it. so I ran across the 2nd bayliner, its bigger and in better shape, and cost 1/2 as much!!!!!!!!! the 1st one has a 2.3 volvo with aq 275 out drive I put alot of work into that boat, I hate to see it go to waste. I bought alot of new parts. its a shame. If anyone can use anything on this boat or better yet someone want to drop an engine in it let me know I will make you an awesome deal on it!!!!!!!!!!!
now on to the new project ! this boat is in really good shape the upholstery is shot of course. the floor has a few soft spots (the other one was completely rotten when I started) the carpet has been replaced and has an on board fuel tank that has never had fuel in it. all i need to hook it up is a piece of hose for the filler neck. does that need to be marine rated? or can I just use a piece of hose that is resistant to the fuel? the transom and stringers are an unknown factor @ this point. the 1st boat's transom and stringers were in good shape and the entire floor was rotten, this one the floor is just spongy, so hopefully I'll be ok there (pray). from what I can see they apperar to be loaded down with glass (3/8 to 1/2") it almost looks funny with the amount of glass they used. I'm gonna consider this a + right now. this boat has 125 force o/b. seems to run pretty good. I know nothing about an o/b. dosent seem to be pumping water very well it just spits out the back @ high rpm @ low its a small stream not what I've seen on other o/b's. I have a new pump, but it seems like a job to install it. I hit the other forum and got some very detailed instructions only thing missing was pics. this guy is awesome! he was amazingly detailed. I'll be posting pics as soon as I can sneak the camera out (wife fusses bout grease). keep her floatin guys

Beware the soft spots, any continual offcolored dripping at the drain, any flex at transom when pushing down on tilted motor. Good Luck.

the motor dosent budge! I've climbed on it and bounced before I bought it. the guy almost had a cow! there is some discoloration @ the drain hole the wood is exposed inside the hole but it is intact Ive dug at it a little. after this weekend Im going to try to dry everything I can start ripping up the floors. I have some rubberized coating I was thinking about painting the inside of the hull and storage lockers with before I put the floor back. Is this agood idea? I have 5 gal of fiberglass resin, but no hardener. I assume a paint store or auto parts would have the hardener. I've already tore most of the upholstery out sorry I didnt get any pics but we all know what that looks like. a big mess! I rebuilt the seats reusing the old wood and hardware this will have to be redone with new wood soon and I need to replace the bases and get new foam. I thinking of using a water sealer on the new wood, its exterior grade, but a little more protection cant hurt. I'm also thinking of getting rid of the carpet & putting down a vinyl. I'm not sure how that would work out though. it would be water proof but slick, and it may stretch and draw with temp changes. any thoughts? it seems like the carpet would get wet and hold moisture.

1) I'd be wary off a rubberized paint in the ski locker. If it doesn't adhere well, it could peel off and plug the drain holes, especially at the rear of the fuel tank. 2) I put removable (for drying) in/outdoor carpet in mine.

makes sense didnt think bout that. Im taking on a small amount of water somewhere. enough to fill the bilge in a few hours. I just wired up a float switch on the pump yesterday. the bottom of the hull is almost perfect, no big scatches, or dings, just 2 spots about 3 or 4 " on the bottom edge of the hull. the fiberglass looks solid, it mostly looks like the gel coat chipped off. what would be good to stop the water rhino liner mabey? or fiberglass? or what? next week I'm gonna tear into this thing wide open, floors are comin out, upholstery going in, and hope and pray that I dont run into anything major. it looks like most of the damage is on the high traffic spots, pulled the carpet back and the wood looked pretty solid under the dashes. the storage compartments in the bow are weak and spongy, around the ski locker is weak and sags a little, and the rear seat is rotten. and the floor is soft behinfd the driver seat.

I had chips on the keel where it had been beached many times. Filled with Marine Tex and installed a keel guard. High and dry now. If you're on bunks, you have to check under them also. Sounds like you've got your hands full with the rest.

bunks? are those the seat pedistals? if so they are rotten. I was planning to completely remove them and replace with some aluminum frames I have from another older boat. I will be posting a ton of pics, I'm going to document everything I can. I also have the frame work for a couple of canopy's, the width is almost the same as mine I think I can make @least 1 of them work for my boat. anyone have any thoughts on this idea good, bad, dumb or what? just tryin to save a buck. what would be a good way to restore the shine to the boat? any product suggestions?

On the trailer, your boat sits on bunks or rollers. If bunks, there could be some damage to the hull concealed by bunks. Canopy?, if you're talking bimini. Without installation instructions you'll probably need a six pack of your favorite beverage. That's for a friend who will help you hold the deployed top at the best usable position to locate mounting brackets. A custom made fabric for your frame may cost as much or more than a new, complete w/ instructions bimini top. Shine depends on the effort you want to put into it. To start an animated bunch of posts just ask about vaseline. Lots of posts about that subject.
