New Bimini....

I just received my bimini top for my boat UPS today.

I am trying to figure out where to put the mounts for the main bow. The directions tell me to put the mounts on the flat surface on the top of the sides, tells me that have the forgiveness to the inside so the bow would go from outside in. I would like to install them at a 45 degree on a flat surface down inside the boat with the forgiveness to the outside. That way, the mount will not mess up my cover (I have a factory full, over the side, with a rope all the way around the boat, similar to those you buy aftermarket.)

I hope you guys understand what I am trying to describe. Do you see a problem with mounting on a flat surface at a 45 degree angle?

I looked at several factory bimini's, and they all mount on the windshield now days!!

Re: New Bimini....

I dont know the answer but if you must mount it where it will interfear with your cover find something to cover it up. Like i have latches on my windshield and button snaps and what not that would surely tear through my cover. What i did was got one of those pool noodles thats made out of foam and cut it down the center to slip it over the windshield so that way the cover would not tear. That might not work for you but there is things you can do to keep prutrusions(sp?) from tearing your cover. Good luck

Re: New Bimini....

... what kind of boat?

Not sure if we are talking the same mounts. But I chased this also when I first bought my bimini top. What I found best for me was an outside gunwhale mount. This allowed for the stress and canopy to open freely with no bind. It made for much more room. I could not mount the canopy inside because it hit the side windows and would not lift open. What I did was lay the canopy down, with storage boot, along the backs of the aft seating. I also made sure the tilt of the O/B did not strike the canopy when titled up. After these checks, it allowed me to mark where the main supports would be mounted on the boat. I used small galvanized brackets from Home Depot then painted these with spray epoxy. I mounted them just below the side windows. If you go this route, make a backing on the inside of the boat acting like a support plate to add strength to the mount. The fiberglass is thinner up top and needs it. The mounts have not interfered with my boat cover.

i have always liked slide mounts, it allows you to adjust the top in many ways, and to push it completely out of the way. i like to us the side mounts, which keeps the gunnel top clear for other applications. you can see the side slide tracks in this picture.
