Re: new boat check list

There is a list of Coast Guard Requirements. Some Dealers throw it in:
Anchor + Anchor Line:
~4 PFD (or one for everyone in the boat(
1 Throwable PFD cushion or ring
3 Flares
1 noise maker other than the boat's horn (whistle or blow horn)
1 other visible daytime distress signal, can be a 4th flare.

Suggestions:
2+ Docklines
2+ Boat Bumpers
1 First aid kit
1 Oar that is long enough to comfortable use. I like one w/ a T at the end so I can use it as a grapple.
1 Small set of tools (screw driver, knife, wrench, pliers, etc.)
1 Large bottle of Sun Screen (will be surprised at people who forget)

I keep most of this stuff in a water proof container. This is all off the top of my head, I might have forgotten other things, other people will fill in.

describe the boat, the place you will use it, how you will store it, and what you will use it for.

By "anything you should look for" do you mean in the ways of problems, or equipment that it should have?

"being built" is unusual--is it custom?

Extra prop and hardware, along with floatable wrench, cockpit cover, dock cover, and repair manual.

Consult your local watercraft laws if you are an inland lake boater. In MN we are not required to have flares. Also not required to have anything more than the boat horn unless you are over 26 feet..

Fire extinguisher is a requirement everywhere I've been, although specs on the extinguisher vary from state to state.

Don't let them over charge you on PDI(pre delivery inspection)They want to make sure the boats ok, to cover their asses also.

A lot of people go to a dealer and buy a boat off the lot. Other people want features and colors that they might not have there. The manufacture can make a boat/car to your specs, if they can't find one near by. That is what happen when my folks purchased their regal.

You might want to consider a boating course if you havent taken one yet. GO to USPS.org for a course near you. If you are really umcomfortable about taking delivery from the dealer, hire a marine surveyor to inspect the boat for you, or at least consult with one, and take it out for a sea trial to make sure all engines and systems are in working order. Pay particular attention to all electrical circuits and plumbing.
They will probably try to sell you a service contract. Probably not worth it.
They will also try to sell you a lot of extras, such as GPS and other electronics that were not included in your order. That's up to you, but take your time and check on prices for the units and the costs of installation.

Yes that is correct, its being built because i ordered it with my colour choice and options and engine etc, its a monterey 204 fs, i will be using it on the lakes to cruise and hangout. I am looking to see if there is anything to look for in a new boat before taking delivery, like defects etc

I wouldn't worry too much about searching for defects. You will have a warranty and any defects will make themselves known in a hurry. Most of the issues to look for when buying boats apply to used boats, not new.

I got a air horn at Cabelas (I'm sure they can be bought elsewhere), that can be re-charged from a air compressor. I like it real well. Just a thought.

#1 thing to look for in a new boat - make sure the plug is in it when you launch it ;)
