Welcome to iboats, and to boating.

Yes, crossing a wake takes some getting used to.
To minimize the wake's effect, you should not be parallel to it.
Cross at a 45* to 90* angle.
It can be very dangerous to cross "near parallel" to the wake.

Sounds like you should be taking a boating course during the off season.
They are offered by the DNR in Ohio, and may be required, depending on your age.
THey are also offered by the Coast Guard, or other similar organizations.

Boating handling, safety, how to do things right, and rules of the water are all covered.

I took the course when I was 10, and my father "audited" the course with me.

I have since taken a refresher, and more recently, an online course. Good info for all that will be in your boat.

As for fixing up your boat, you can do whatever you want.
Check out the boat restoration forum to get ideas.
Look at new and used boats to find ideas you may want to incorporate into your vessel.

As far as the stereo goes, many here would wish you not upgrade. The louder your stereo gets, the more people get pizzed off.

A power inverter and a home stereo is gonna cost you a bundle to get the desired result.

The fact is, that engine noise, wind noise, speaker placement, space limitations, poor acoustic surroundings, etc, are gonna all work against you.

The best advice I can give, is keep the stereo modest. If you want loud, get a decent mp3 player with wireless headphones.

Happy boating.
