First off i wanna say thanks for the site its helped a lot already. I picked up my new to me 1977 glastron v-174 today, got it from a friend of my brothers. I was told it ran fine but stopped charging so its been parked for about a year. It has a volvo 4cylinder. i hooked up the muffs and garden hose today and hooked up a new batt and i got all assesories but the engine won't turn over. I really need a manual and wiring diagram for this boat so if anyone has a source of an online one would be great. i am an auto mechanic by trade so engines are not new to me, but i'll be honest i no nothing about boats but am egar to learn. the motor looks to be in running order, no water in oil or anything like that. once i get it turning over i plan a compression test and will go from there.
thanks for any help

Re: "new" boat need help

I would pull the plugs, and see if the engine turns. A shot of Mystery Oil in each cylinder can really help...!

Have you tried to rotate the engine by hand - just to see that it has not seized.

ok guys today after work i made sure the motor trured no problems there took the starter and solenoid apart and cleaned all the contacts and brushes. put it back togather and she turns over nice. comp was #1 122 #2 120 #3 125 #4 119. i got fuel in a can goin to the pump for now and shes gettin fuel but have no spark. i have power with the key on going to the + side of the coil the neg has a another wire that has power with the key and the wire runnng to the points on it as well. cap and rotor as well as point look like new. i don't know what the points shoulds be gapped to though. this is how the wires were when i bough it so i donn it that right i've added a lil digram to show how the wires are. thanks for the help guys, hopefully i can get her running and she will make a decent first boat.

Re: "new" boat need help

well i got the ol girl running, actually runs and idles great. BUT after i let it idles for a couple mins i pull the dipstick to find a milkshake. i figure either the blocks cracked or oil cooler since i had good compression. the oil cooler i noticed the oil cooler was dripping an oil water mixture out on one end and whe i remone the lines to it the ends spun easily are these suppose to be tight? i need a lil help on where to go from here. thanks for any help. o and im glad now i only gave $400 for the boat and trailer now lol

Re: "new" boat need help

do you live in an area that freezes up in the winter, the engine may not have gotten winterized and unfortunatly ice and metal dont mix.
first thing I would do remove cooler and hard line it.
cap cooler one end and presure up to see if it leaks.
if not check block for cracks.

Re: "new" boat need help

Drive uses 10-30 motor oil.

Problem with being cheap and using an automotive alternator is they are not spark sealed (or legal) and can cause your boat to blow up.

Sorry to be so blunt (well not really if it saves a life or two).

If you can find an auto one like your original one you can transplant the innerds in to the old case.

or maybe find a rebuild kit for the old one (brushes and diode plate).

Re: "new" boat need help

Good news on the oil cooler! I love the boat. I had a '73 just like it but a tri-hull - I always liked the V better, but hey, I was only 8 when my Dad bought that boat new and he didn't pay too much attention to me then. You'll enjoy it. I had the same engine / drive too. That boat was built like a tank. I owned until the mid 90's.

Re: "new" boat need help

Go back to the Merc, OMC, Volvo etc heading (one back from this page) and click on the first thread (marked "Adults Only"). All of the manuals for the engines and drives are in there, or at least links to them. After you download your manual, you may have to open all the .pdf files in order to see any of them, but all the information is there. If your a mechanic, read and reread the one on winterizing and how it is done properly.

This is an excellent forum with all the answers you need. Keep up the good work guys and see you on the water.

Re: "new" boat need help

i got home from work today lil after 5, threw my old alternator back on and found a broken wire which made it charge a little but a next size shorter belt had it working great. I should have done this when i bought it but for some reason a listened to the PO when he said the alt was shot. i also refilled the outdrive i let it drain while i was at work. took it to the lake and launched it by about 6:15, local resevior is only 5 miles away. she ran great normal temp and oil pressure charged good. took a few laps around the lake ancored and went swimming for an hour and pulled her out at bout 8:30. only issue was i never paid any attention to my winch and the old cable only comes out like 6 inches but my ol f350 has a 4 inch lift so i could back under the boat a lil farther with no problems. im replacing that tomorrow. o and my buddy figured out riding in boats makes him a lil nervous lol. checked all my oils when i got it home and motor and outdrive are still both clean which i was a lil conserned abour afrter my oil cooler issue earlier. but now im hook this is my first boat but i don't think i will ever go without one again. sorry bou t the long post but i just wanna thank all of you that have helped me

Re: "new" boat need help

Thats great! Congratulations. You'll love that boat. As for the winch, just drive onto the trailer.
