Just thought I would post on this board for all you possible new pontoon boat owners. We just got our new pontoon boat less than a month ago. We have been out of town and were very excited to take our new boat out for the 4th. We took off our cover and most of the seats are stained the color of the cover (blue). We were shocked and so was the dealer. The dealer has been great during this situation. They contacted the cover manufacturer and they sent a cleaner, didnt work, then just went through manufacturers insurance to pay for new seats. Getting them done this week. So beware if you get a new cover, (not custom made), to make sure that those covers do not have this problem.

That is really suprising, I wonder if they skipped a step in manufacturing the fabric.

We have made 50,000+ boats and I have never heard of that happening, very strange.

Just happened to me -- not a new cover/pontoon. 5 yrs old. My suncruiser tarp is blue -- the stains are rust colored, like another poster has had. Factory cover came with the pontoon. I don't care if it is 20 yrs old -- this should not happen. Will contact dealer tomorrow.

I have a universal fit pontoon cover from Classic Accessories. Blue in color. When you open the instructions and care info, the very first thing you see is a warning about this. Here it is, word for word.

"CAUTION
If your boat is new, use of this product
is not recommended within the first
four weeks of ownership of the boat.
Some compounds used in new boats
can release gases that will cause the
dyes in boat covers to transfer to the
boat, potentially staining the boat or its
components. Boat covers can be used
safely after this introductory period."

Usually when the stains are rust colored that's a sign of mildew. If you leave your boat in the sun it will usually fade out, providing it's not to bad. Our last boat did that and the sun bleached it out in a few days.
Good Luck.

Lakegeorge, you are right! Never would have believed it, but my dealer agrees. Two days in the sun, and the seemingly impermeable stains, are all but gone. Mildew in the foam, is what I am told. 5 years and nothing like this, but then we did have the wettest April in history followed by some 90 degree days. Thanks.
