hey all i just bought a 211 regatta 21 ft v6 mercruiser inboard out board, i had to have the freeze plug replaced and patched the crack on the manifold. took it to the lake to day to try it out after haven this fixed started up it was ideling real low took it out of the dock an my granddad full throttle it when whe got out there an we went a good bit then all of a sudden it was wanting to die when u have it full throttle then it did die. put it back in nutral and started it back up it will run when u dont full throttle it just half or lil less then half, got it back to the dock adjusted the idle so it was sped up a little but didnt get to take it back out grand dad affraid we would get stuck on the lake. the boat repair guy fixed the freeze plug an crack and said all was good wasnt leaking water and the oil was free of water, i dont know what it could be like i said new to a boat, just picked this one up for 1000, cause the inside needs to be redone cause of rotten seats and cracked seats. sorry for a long post just want to get this boat running right so i can get out on the lake.

hey x;

im thinking he should start with the fuel filter. shes 20 years old, and sounds like maint may have been an issue.
tylor, let's wait for a second opinion before you get crazy and start ripping stuff out. I agree with fuel starvation....did you buy a shop manual yet?
that's where we can start.

Well the repair shop problably didnt full throttle it nor would they on dry land so they may have never seen this comming.

I had a fuel filter problem on an old boat like that the fuel tank was full of sediment.

your motor draws a lot more fuel wide open than it does 1/2 throttle.most boats have a check valve where the fuel line connects to the tank also.those are known to plug up.also make sure the tank vent isnt plugged up with a mud wasp or something.i have cleaned more wasps out of those.sometimes they get all the way to the tank and end up in the anti-siphon valve.[check valve]

Check to make sure the choke opens up. It may be stuck .

If it is stuck closed that could be why it ran for a while at WOT(while cold) then would only run around idle(once warm).

Re: new boat owner i need some help please

how long has it been since the previous owner ran the boat? that would be my starting point, if the boat interior is in bad shape, its a good indication that it wasnt used alot lately. how old is the fuel in the tank, did you do anything to the motor (other than what was mentioned) to get it ready for use on the water or did you just turn the key and go?

Hey tylor remember it is NOT a freeze plug. Just becuase they pop out once in a very great while and may save your butt, it is not their intended purpose. The plugs are used to fill the hole that was used when casting the block/manifold etc. Never rely on them to protect from freezing. And as for the WOT problem listen to the other guys here and start with the fuel system. I am leaning toward check valve of maybe a carb adjustment and new fuel filter. Good luck and welcome to iboats.

Re: new boat owner i need some help please

You need to have a base from which to get your engine/boat running correctly. Step one is to get a service manual for the engine. Try ebay for a start. Step two is to do a basic tune-up of the engine including replacing the fuel filter(s). Step three is to make sure all the adjustable items (timing, choke, throttle, shifting) are set to specifications. If the fuel is old, you may/should drain it all as well as any junk at the bottom of the tank. Add fresh fuel with stabilizer. Check all the hoses, particularly the fuel lines. Remove, clean with emery cloth and brass wool, and re-connect all the battery and main electrical cables and wires. Then start her up and see how she runs. Make any adjustments needed at the dock before taking her out on the lake. You may still have some full-throttle problems. That may be caused by gunk build-up in the carb. If that's the case, the carb will have to be rebuilt or replaced. That task might be beyond your abilities; you decide. Good luck and keep us informed as to how you make out. Hy
