We had the chance to test out Bayliner's new VR5 and VR6 bowriders this past fall.

At the recent Miami International Boat Show the VR5 won the Innovation Award for "Best Bowrider". The evolution of the family bowrider is clearly seen in this new series of stern drive powered boats. The company that turned the family bowrider concept into the "Boat-Motor-Trailer" package "back in the day" is again bringing innovation and value to boating families.

Bayliner and other bowrider manufacturers have been known for helping get more families on the water. The family bowrider was traditionally powered by a stern drive with a few powered by outboards. The advantage of the stern drive was clearly seen and heard. With a marinized automotive engine tucked under a large, upholstered sun deck pad the boat became much more quiet and had more usable deck space than a similar design with outboard power. While the introduction of the four-stroke outboard has revolutionized the industry delivering quieter, more fuel efficient power, the stern drive still offers the family bowrider great room and comfort.

Stern drive power has changed too with greater fuel efficiency and improved power to weight ratio engines.

The VR series from Bayliner is clearly helping lead the way by responding to the development of different power options and the creature comforts boaters look for while retaining their position in the market to deliver it at a great value. Key to those changes, clearly, is usable interior space.

To maximize interior usable space Bayliner's designers teamed with their marketing gurus to develop and name: BeamForward™ and AftAdvantage™. When you compare the bow section of the VR5, which has a running surface of 18 feet, to similar size runabouts, the difference in space is obvious (that's the "BeamForward" design).

Most traditional bowrider designs have a much more pointed bow which quickly limits its usable seating and storage space. The VR5's design carries the full beam (8 feet) further forward than traditional bowriders creating a large, oversized bow rider section. Yes, a bowrider you can actually ride in!

In the cockpit, most traditional designs begin integrating their swim platforms over the running surface.

The VR5 moves the swim platform aft of it (that's part of the "AftAdvantage" design), using all the area over the hull for seating and lounging. Together with the boat's full 8 feet of beam (as opposed to many at 7'6") this makes the VR5 feel like a boat that is 2 feet longer - the company claims that most typical 18 foot runabouts will actually fit inside the new VR5, (which has an LOA of 20' 4").

More room and more features are great but usually that results in moving the cost out of reach of most new boaters. When shopping for a new boat in the 18' range, the best surprise about the VR5 is that it's priced comparable to most 18-footers that don't have the size, room, features and power competitors have.

Other "AftAdvantage" features are a three-position companion seat, rear lounger with walk-thru and the self-bailing cockpit. The VR series features quick-planing Deep-V hull designs with their all-fiberglass stringer system, and some integral strength designs in the fiberglass that delivers some really nice hull side sculpting.

We'll talk about the power package from Mercury/MerCruiser that is made in Fond du Lac, WI in a future article.
