$8.00 per gal. is insane. Is that at the dock or land? Something has to be done to get us away from gasoline, Think I'd switch to sail if we got to that. Sorry don't know your drive, but the gas thing got me. Good luck with it.

No, the raw water pump is attached to the engine, right under the strainer.
You can use muffs on that drive, you will also need to plug the secondary pickup in the bottom of the lower unit.

Raw water pump is not in the outdrive but runs off a belt on the front of the motor. It wold have a couple large hoses entering/exiting the pump. the impeller should be replaced every two years.

I'm not familiar with your engine but the best method would be to try to hook a hose to the exit end of the exchanger and run water through it backwards.

Is your engine overheating?

Re: New boat, which outdrive?

I finally found it on the Volvo Penta website. Looks like the raw water pump is driven off the timing gear or something in the front of the engine.

http://www.volvopenta.com/VOLVOPENTA/NA/EN-US/MARINE_LEISURE_ENGINES/OUT_OF_PRODUCTION_ENGINES/Pages/out_of_production_engines.aspx

If you go to this link, under 'Engine Group', select sterndrive.
Under 'Fuel type', select diesel. Under 'Production Year', 1990's.

This should give you a list of engines, including the KAD32p. Seems like a very cool engine. Download the info they have on the engine if you want.

Sorry for the bad info on the pump.

Good luck with the boat.

Don, thanks for your reply, my boat is on a swinging mooring so no muffs option to flush, but i would like to look after the new engine by flushing, will the clean water run through if i pour it in the top of the strainer?

PS Sincere apologies to all you guys and the USA on behalf BP, its bad enough that between them and the UK government we are being ripped off at 8 dollars a gallon for gas,
now they choose through their greed and incompetence to shame us as well.

Is your engine overheating?[/QUOTE]

thanks for reply, no not overheating, but has less than 300 hours and looks and runs as new, so i just want to do the best i can for it,
my boat is on a swinging mooring in the estuary so very lively water in terms of mussels barnacles etc, the mussels get right inside the heat exchanger and start to grow which clogs it up.
