Hello Everyone!, I'm fairly new to this site and also owning a boat. I know next to nothing about motors and outboards. But I really want to learn. Recently I boat an old fiberglass boat with a Johnson Javelin RJE-18c and since I've owned it I haven't gotten it to fire up yet. Like I said I know next to nothing about motors but I'm a man of average intelligence and with the help of you guys and some manuals that I've purchased I'm confident that I can get this thing running decent enough to get me out and fishing. So here's my back story of this motor. The gentleman that I purchased the boat from said he had the motor running out on the lake the previous year and it would start and idle just fine but when he increased the throttle it would bog down and wouldn't get the boat to plane it would simply just put them around the lake. What I've done to the motor with the help of a friend of mine who knows quite a bit more than me but doesn't know everything haha, I've replaced the starter and cleaned the carburetor and replaced the gaskets but my kit did not come with a float but the float did look okay. So what I'm trying to get help with is what to do from here and how to do it. I know I have to go through and Check points and compression and everything like that but again I'm new to all this so could anyone give me detailed advice on how those things are done? Thank you in Advance everyone and Happy Boating to All!

No Title

Your 1956 Johnson has bad (cracked) ignition coils unless they have already been replaced. All 1956 Johnsons do. And that very well could be the cause of it just putting around with no power. Whatever, you need to pull the flywheel and check the ignition system, which also includes the points and condensers. You need a flywheel puller (harmonic balancer puller will do), and a torque wrench to put it back on at 60-65 foot/pounds torque. This is extremely important.

Parts are available here at iboats.
