Hello,

I bought my first boat, took it out for a trial run to test its suitablility for my dad. i wanted to spend some time with him as he got bad news. Boat ran great(1975 chappral pleasure boat), then sometihng in the water hit hard and now it seems jammed into reverse, and not even full speed reverse.. talking 1-2mph. cables feel jammed up as well, can not even move the shifter into netural or forward. i'll give an example of where it is stuck

Forward..............Neutral..../////...........Reverse

it will go up to the ///'s AND BACK DOWN TO REVERSE

my options are:

1.goto and expensive mechanic

2.pay the $100 to the guy who sold it to me, who is willing to sell me two more motors for parts use, they are a 76' and 77' 85hp evinrude.

raise money selling crap to buy a difernet outboard

First...... disconnect the control cables from the engine in order to see if you can shift the engine by hand at the engine's shift linkage. If you can, then a problem exists with the control box, not the lower unit.

Now, if it is still impossible to shift the lower unit, slowly and carefully remove the large slotted drain screw from the lower unit and examine the magnet that is attached to that screw. Small fuzzy pieces that you could rub between your fingers is normal. Chips, splinter like slivers, and chunks of metal are not normal and would indicate that something within the lower unit has failed.

Let us know what you find.
