Can anybody help?
I recently purchased a boat 15'5" fiberglass bowrider with a 55HP Nissan motor on it. I clunks into gear. I lowered th idle but it still clunks. What could it be. Also the RPM's never get over 1600-1800, so I will probably never get close to 55HP, what do I need to do?

Hi Newont-Boater,
If you have a stainless steel prop the engine will clunk when you shift it.

Is the tach reading right? How fast are you going? At that rpm the boat may not even plane out. Is it running on both cyls. Good
compression/ Clean carbs.
...corm...

Re: new boater help

Thanks Corm for replying,

The fastest I've had the boat is 31 mph(2 adults) with the tach reading 1800 rpm. Pulling a skier I can only go about 27-29 mph (with a spotter). If I have more than 4 adults in the boat, I'm lucky if the boat will do 10 mph, even though the boat is rated for 7 adults (mind you it also allows a 75HP motor)

The idle right now reads 400 rpm, and if I were to lower it, the motor sounds like it would stall. Maybe just needs a tune-up. I have an aluminum prop. Would a different prop make a big difference? I also have fins on the motor to help pull out skiers.
Would that have any impact on speed.

Re: new boater help

If you can get 31mph from a 60hp at 1800 rpm , i what one! Think of the speed you will get at 5500rpm, it sound like your rev counter is on the wrong setting to me.
