i'm new here this is only my 2nd post. i've found a lot of info here but i still need a lil more help. ok first of all let me tell you what's going wrong. i have a 91 force 70hp. at first it would idle rough and die out when i give it gas. after i've changed out a couple of things it's now running for about 5 mins and then dies out. then i can't start it anymore. i've changed out the fuel pump diaphram, new fuel line, new spark plugs, and rebuilt the carb. is there something else i'm missing? when i took it for a test run today it run fine for about 5 mins then i had to paddle in, i didn't go far. the one thing i noticed today when i home, i disconnected the small hose on the bottom of the carb and caught the gas in a glass container and it looked real crappy and had water in it. but when i took off the the fuel line going to the fuel pump the the gas was clean. where could this water be coming from? also number 2 spark plug is clean and wet. the other two is dirty. that's about all i can tell you right now. someone please help me. thanks

You should do a compression test. With the muffs on you are probably only running on two cylinders. Chances are number two cylinder has low or no compression. If compression tests good do a test for spark on number two spark

ok i'll try that tomarrow, but will a low compression cause the plug to be will? i've been reading a lot of post on here. could it be a leaking head gasket?

Re: new boater here....please help.

That is what the compression test will tell you. IF compression is bad in that cylinder water is coming in that cylinder and steam cleaning that spark plug. Hopefully if that is the case it is only the head gasket which is not too expensive to replace. If there is piston or cylinder damage the costs will go way up. If compression test good you may have an ignition problem. The compression test will point you in the right direction for troubleshooting

Another thing you can do with the muffs is put the clean plug in cylinder 1 or 3 and put a dirty plug in two. If after 15 minutes of running with muffs number 2 is clean you have a blown head gasket.
