Hey guys. I know this issue (impellers) is probably beat to death on the board but I was wondering about whether I should tear into my 1988 100hp Sea Ray (merc) outboard to check it. I get flow out of the tell tale but am unsure of if/when the impeller was ever replaced.

Is is just the 4 bolts that hold the lower unit on? Should I just order a impeller replacement kit from someone like overtons?

I'm pretty good with motorcycles and cars but outboards are strange to me.

Thanks in advance for the help!

A new impeller is cheap insurance. It is also a good idea to keep a kit and proper tools in the boat. I have a friend who replaced one on a beach miles from the nearest camp and resumed fishing, rather than paddling. Any Merc dealer can sell you 2 kits. Use one now and keep the other in the boat.

Good Luck.

There is a nut under the trim tab(mark position before taking it off) and a nut in the front of the LU on the top of the deflector plate. It is a good idea to put in a new imp when you get a different boat so you know what you have. If the imp is burnt from running it out of water replace the bodys also. Get Merc parts!

------------------
...have fun...corm

cubic inches = power
power = speed
speed = FUN

Email me if you need to.

gotta treat impellers as a maintenance item......every 4 years drop the case and change it.....NO MATTER WHAT!
