New boater needs advice/opinions on older Nissan outboard.

Well after many years of wanting, I finally bought a used 1984 basstracker (17'). I bought the boat less motor and just found a used Nissan 9.9, electric start, 2 stroke longshaft with controls. The motor looks almost new and appears to be late 80's or early 90's (it has a silver top with red & blue graphics and a dark blue shaft) and is all original. I bought it from a retired man who has had it sitting in his heated garage for the past 9 years. The motor starts right up with no problems and everything looks 95% new. However, the "squirter"? on the side does not squirt water which I have researched is a symptom of the water pump not working. I just bought a water pump kit off eBay and was wondering how difficult it is to replace these. (I am moderately mechanically inclined and have rebuilt car/truck motors and such.) Also, my Nissan manual refers to a "zinc anode" that is located on the lower shaft of the motor. It says to replace it if it looks past 50% worn. What does this anode do, and where would I find one. One last question I have is that I need to find some kind of connection kit to connect the steering cable to this Nissan so I can operate it from the console. Can anyone recommend or point me in the right direction for this also?<br /><br />(I'm having a hard time finding help from anyone locally that deals with Nissan motors. - Columbus, Ohio)<br /><br />Many thanks.

welcome to iboats buckeye <br /><br />before we go into long detail, i need to know either the year, or the model number, i can get the year from that...<br /><br />reason i ask is in late 80's tohatsu's parts manufacturer companie changed hands and now parts for the earlier series motors are unavailable and newerparts wont interchange...<br /><br />but yes, if its not squirting, thats usaully the waterpump, although it could be a blocked thermostat.<br />get a service manual for that thing, online or from ebay... it is worth its weight in gold.<br /><br />ive had and currently have 3 nissans, so i like to cinsider my self a mild expert on the smaller ones, email me for more direct help<br /><br />m ikey

Buckeye,<br /><br />The anode is a self sacrificing zinc that protects the engine from corrosion. It only works when the engine is in the water. No worries for you.<br /><br />mike,<br /><br />Keep the tips here on line. We can all learn.

Many thanks to phatmanmike. Looks like the model I have is a newer one that parts won't be an issue. (NS9.9B2)<br /><br />O.K. I have points 1 & 2 covered - now on to the steering. Again, I bought my boat without a motor but it does already have a steering console and cable ran to the back. The steering cable has an approx. 12" steel rod at the end with a single hole on the end which I assume is for the linkage. Nothing is holding the steering cable at the transom. I am guessing I need some kind of bracket to attache the rod to the boat transom and then will need a linkage arm to connect the steering rod to the motor. Anyone have any sources for something that will work for a Nissan, or perhaps a generic steering kit?

You say it's a bass tracker but the motor is a long shaft. Your boat should have a short transom. Unless I'm confused about the shaft length on the smaller hp outboards??

Quantum, on the smaller outboards you usually either have a 15" (short) shaft or a 20" (long) shaft. I'm not sure about where the cutoff is, but I'm guessing around 25hp. I know the bigger motors have much longer shafts than just 20".<br /><br />Also, just wanted to mention that the link that phatmanmike posted showed that bracket kit to be out of stock. I searched high and low, and looks like many sites are reporting it as discontinued. Luckily I found one left at Outdoor Superstore.<br /><br />Looks like next week will be busy with hooking up the steering and replacing the waterpump once everything arrives. (I really wanted to taker her out this weekend - the weather is beautiful, for now...)<br /><br />I wanted to say thanks for the help, and a good first experience on iboats. I'm sure I'll visit often and be posting more questions in the future.
