These are probably stupid questions but: what am I looking for to make sure my water pump is pumping? Some mentioned "look for that telltale spray" but since this is my first boat I'm not sure what I'm looking for. Also, am I looking for water coming out of that tube that sticks out of my lower unit (is this the peehole?). My motor is a Merc 115 inline 6, 78 if that makes any difference.
Thanks, you all have been very helpful and I am now obesessed with this website...

There should be a hose that comes from exhaust cover and out the lower pan of the motor. You will see water streming out of the motor from one side if you do not replace the waterpump. The hose in the lower unit is an attachment to attach a speedometer

Smike26,Not sure on your motor but if there is a telltale they usually come out near the rear
under the pan under the power head If you take
off the cowl and look back there inside you
should see a rubber tube running to the outlet.
If no water comes out dont panic it may just be plugged with a bug or nest of some sort.
Gently clear it out with a wire.
It would be good to get a manual.
