Re: new boater

also what is it about the radaiter on a 3.1 or 3.0 not sure what it is but a volvo in 1988 has a radiator on front and guy said it is full of antifreeze but the water from lake cools that is that something most boats have or what. and do you guys think it will have enough power to pull tubes in a 18.5 foot boat with 3.1 volvo penta.
thanks you guys

Re: new boater

I have a volvo with a similar engine. The volvo engine your talking about has two cooling systems, it has a closed or(freshwater) cooling system, and also a sea water cooling system. The sea water cooling system sucks water in from the lake or river and runs it up near the exahust manifolds to cool the engine that way. I am not an experienced boater myself so if there are any mechanics out there, correct me if I am wrong. About pulling a tube, it will be fine, I have a 19' bayliner with a 2.3L volvo, and it pulls tubes fine.

Not sure what engine you have in it, you sure it's not an AQ131 ? Here is a link to the sales literature on it from 88.

http://www.volvo.com/NR/rdonlyres/399B6AF9-F4C7-48C0-9992-10C076D4CFEB/0/AQ131C_SP_1988_en.pdf

Also, if it is this engine or one similar, it's not called a radiator in a boat, it's a heat exchanger.
The engine basically has 2 cooling systems. The antifreeze side cools like an automotive engine to a point, the raw water side takes sea (Lake) water from the outside and cools the antifreeze side. Since the engine is enclosed in a small compartment there is no way to get air flow to use a radiator. Therefor the use of sea water to cool the closed side of the cooling system.
