My 85 Cobalt with Chevy 5.7 with OMC 800 outdrive and a spanking new Eldebrock Carb that replaces the old flooding spread bore Quadrajet. Boat runs much better but when in the water will not shift out of gear unless I kill the engine. Kicker is it works fine when connected to the water hose. As soon as it goes in the lake it locks in gear until I kill the engine. It goes into gear fine problem is trying to shift out or gear with engine running. Has anyone experienced this problem? HELP!

What he said. Some drives have a shift interruptor switch that stalls the engine for a moment while shifting gears. High idle will also cause this problem, you should be around 700 rpm. If the idle is high, and/or the interruptor is not working then it causes this.

Also, just to harp on the safety bandwagon, is this a marine carb or an automotive one? the fuel bowl vent setup is somewhat different. There is a carb thats 95% identical to the Edelbrock that came factory on later MerCruisers. Its a Weber carb (Weber actually makes that Edelbrock carb, look for the W cast onto the side) but its set up as a marine unit with the correct vents and the connection down to the fuel pump.

Any idea why it only hangs up when it's in the water and not while it's on the hose? Rich
