I recently purchased a used boat, my first, and the carpet must be replaced.

Can anyone offer any words of direction/advice for removing the old carpet and installing the new carpet? I have a roll of new carpet and would appreciate any input.

TP3850

First, pull all up that you can by hand.Second,a wire brush and a wire wheel on a drill to remove the rest of the old carpet and as much glue as possable.Third, wash all places were you planning to install new carpet.Fourth, lay out your carpet, ruff cut it to size, leaving extra all around.Use some duct tape to hold it in place as you cut it out.
Note*If you lay the carpet out in the direct sun for some time,it will lay out better in the boat for cutting.Note#2,make sure that you keep the piece of carpet set one way.Carpet has a one way run.Rub your hand back and forth,up and down to see which way the run is.
Best thing to glue the carpet down with in a boat is contact cement.Just paint it out on were you are plannig to carpet, let it set,do the same to the back of the carpet.Note#3,don't go all the way to the ends of were you are installing the carpet with glue at this time, leave 2" or 3"clean.
After laying down your carpet, rub it out with your hand, work from the center and work outward.Next trim the ends to fit, peal back some and brush on more glue to the ends.Thats it!

Re: New carpet installation

there are other options instead of carpet also such as nautolex (spelling) and paint on floor coverings. they would provide an easier to clean surface, but not as soft

good luck
Mike

Re: New carpet installation

I remember reading that someone installed their carpet with a method of removal for cleaning. Snaps, velco or something similar. Just a thought...

Re: New carpet installation

Most new boats come with snap-in, removable carpeting. Sort of like a big throw-rug held down by snaps on the perimeter. Great idea that looks great if you have a gelcoated, glassed, finished floor. would not look good on most older boats that rely on the carpet to hide all the imperfections.
