New Coils

I recently ran into some trouble with a coil on my motor. I ordered 2 because they can't be found here. Now the delema, the old blue ones have been replaced with mercury part number 300-888791. The piece of paper in the box says they will work with either the blue, or the black models. Heres the real question, should I replace both coils on that switch box, or take Mercury's word that they are interchangable and only replace the bad one and leave the good one alone? Any one ever done this? All suggestions appreciated.

Re: New Coils

My first thought would be to replace the two of them and save the old good one for a spare.im sure they are exspensive, probably 100 bucks or more apiece. just like your signature,
A boat is just a hole in the water you dump money into!

Re: New Coils

I actually found them for about 60.00 ea. Problem is that the primary wire has to be cut off the old coil and soldered/crimped (not starting any thing about that topic) to a new terminal included with the new coil. There might be enough room to leave some wire to reassemble it though. I'll find out Saturday.

I am leaning to your suggestions though. Thanks for the reply!

Re: New Coils

Good News! I went ahead and replaced both coils, and the motor runs smooth now without missing! But I will have to wait until after my vacation (2 weeks in NY) before I can take it out. At least they work!

On a side note, when the instructions say cut the wire as close to the coild as possible, they mean it! One wire was almost to short, even though I cut it close!
