New control box/cables help

I'm rebuilding this engine 1979 140HP Johnson, it did not have a control box and cables, I've purchased a new box with new cables, the problem is when the cables are loose they work flawlessy, however when I put them in the trunnion on the engine block they bind and I can't shift am I missing something?

are all bends gentle curves, sharp bends make hard shifting. pictures would help

If you look at the top picture, the control is nice and smooth, however as soon as I put the cables inside the retainers as in the next picture, they bind up
