New Crate Engine Rust

I just bought a brand new(not rebuilt) Mercruiser crate engine.
I got it home, removed the crate and the plastic and checked the oil.
On the end of the dipstick was large clumps of rusty flaked metal.
When I say large I mean as wide as the dipstick and about as half as thick as the dipstick. There were several that big and lots more smaller stuff.
I called the marina and they told me to bring it back to them.
I will tomorrow but in the meantime they left a message on my phone saying to call before I bring it in.
I'm wondering if they are going to try and tell me this is normal and not to worry about it.
Any Ideas or has anyone heard of something like this before?

I would call them and TELL them you are bringing it back.

Give them a chance to do the right thing. Maybe they just want to be sure the right person is at the shop when you get there.
If they do try and talk you into keeping it, then insist on an acceptable engine or a refund.

They only had one left. It was in the showroom. They wrapped it up and gave it to me this morning. They didn't hesitate a bit. Said they had never seen anything like that before.

+1 for their customer service. Hard to find shops that will do the right thing without a struggle.
