new distributor, no tach now

I just installed a rebuilt 350 and replaced the old distributor with a new AC delco electronic one from MM. I hooked up the grey and purple wires, but when I started it up for the first time the tach is at zero. Is the grey wire the sender to the tach? The tach is getting 12v at the dash. It is mostly a volvo penta 200 5.7 with a volvo 280 sterndrive.

thanks for any help

Re: new distributor, no tach now

The tach gets it's signal from the negative side of the coil, it does also have a 12v source power and it sounds like you have that, trace the other wire to the neg. side of the coil and check the ground.
Someone will correct me if I'm wrong but you should have 3 wires to the tach, ground-negative coil-and 12v pos. not counting the light bulb wires.

you are correct to say there are 3 wires on the back of the tach.

i would check to the main engine harness plug on the engine the one that connects the engine harness to the boat harness the wire for the tach may not be making a good contact in there spread the pin if you have to or clean it up
