Ran my SEI drive for 10 hours and changing its oil for the first time.
it doesn't look milky but green.

My guess is this is the grease used during assembly. Here is a pic.

It's not grease, it's an oil, thick oil basically 75W90 gear lube.
SEI doesn't put any gear lube in any of them. That was done by whoever put the 2 parts together. The green lube is Mercruiser Hi Performance gear lube.
That's what should be in it.

Merc Hi Perf gearlube is green. If it's in the beer bottle in the picture it's hard to see the color.

Re: New Drive, first oil change.

The bottle is clear plastic. I put the 2 halfs together and installed on boat. I filled it with the Quicksilver gear lube which is the standard brown color.

When I put the upper and lower together, I did notice a blue/green grease on shaft. I was hoping I could get confirmation that they did the same on the inside giving me this color.

As the oil was draining, the it was streaked with green ( whatever that is ). just to be safe, I'll let it sit over night and see if it separates. The engine hasn't been on for about 3 weeks now so it should have separated. I didn't see a change in the drainage though.

Little to no metal shavings and no water and I'd be happy. I'm a big fan of Quicksilver/merc high perf gearlube, the green stuff.

Let the oil sit for the night and found no water and no signs of metal. I do have some metal savings on the drain plug though. I'll take a picture and post the plug with its shavings. I take it it's all good so I'll press on.

Maybe I slipped high performance in there and didn't even notice.

Thanks!!

Re: New Drive, first oil change.

I wouldn't worry a bit about some fine metal shavings.. Mine made a fair amount as the gears lapped in. I also had a significant gear whine that went away during the first 15 or 20 hours... two years later still doing great... and I'm hard on it compared to most, but I check and change the lube regularly and religously.
