Well it looks like the engine in my Chaparral bit the dust last week (1998 Volvo 4.3GL PBYC). Was cruising on the river when it lost power suddenly and siezed. All readings on the gauges were fine at the time and I found no water in the oil or cylinders so I took it to the shop for their verdict. Only one good cylinder on the compression test and it makes a horrible clunk when trying to turn over.
I would like opinions and advice on the options that exist. Mainly, should I save some $$ and go with a rebuilt longblock from somewhere like Rapido or drop 5-600 more on a new crate engine from somewhere like marineengines4less?
I would like to attempt the swap myself but I really don't have any free time so I'll probably wind up paying the shop to do it. Thought I might make up some of the price difference in the motors with the labor that would be saved with not having to swap the tins, etc. on the crate motor vs. rebuild.
Also, other than closely inspecting my manifolds/risers and replacing them if there is the slightest doubt of their condition, what other items should I go ahead and replace while the engine is out? I figured at least the starter since it is not very accessible otherwise and the circulating pump as well.
Was also considering changing to a 4 barrel carb but I may have to save that swap for next year. I imagine it would be a noticeable difference in power but I want to spend my limited budget in the critical areas for now.
Thanks for any tips/advice and I really appreciate all of the information I have learned from members here by browsing the boards over the past months.
