I currently have 1989 Sunbird with an OMC 5.7L 350. I have been trying to sell it and then engine does have some problems. Well now I am having second thoughts. I have been thinking about re-powering the engine and keeping it. I have found replacement long blocks for $1599.00, does this sound like a good deal(engine block, internals, and heads.)? I have also found replacement engines, complete except for Manifolds, Riserd, Alternator, and starter for about $3500.00. Which way should I go, also I need to replace the manifodls/Risers, and is this a fairly straight forward job. I have a decent mechanical knowledge and the rescources.

Re: new engine question

I guess it would depend on the condition of your existing equipment. Get out your calculator and figure out the cost difference... plan on buying new manifolds, risers and starter (there's no point in taking any chances). Other than that your other stuff can be rebuilt easily.

Yeah I plan on getting new equipment like manifolds, risers, carb., starter, alternator. etc. Like you said I don't want to take a chance. Other than the engine the boat is in great shape. I guess I am tryng to figure out if there are any advantages to bying and "almost complete" engine over a long block kit? I dont' think the math adds up to make it any cheaper though.

Yeah I just went back to that website and figured it all out. To replace everything on the engine, carb, alternator, started etc. using the long block it would be 3453.00. With a "complete engine" it would be 4168.00. Roughly.

There's always a few hundred bucks (minimum) of little odds and ends too. I like to save a buck where I can but I think I'd buy the package in this case. How about warranty?
