Does anyone know the maximum power and weight that can be fitted on a 1988 Bayliner Capri Bowrider 1700? We've an 85hp Force at the moment but want something newer

Re: New Engine spec

Im sorry I cant answer your question directly. Maybe someone else will come along with more information.
Just incase you dont know, that information should be on the data plate, somewhere around the helm area or near the transom area inside the boat.

BTW welcome to iboats.

Re: New Engine spec

Heres the real answer you want 85 HP is what you can use. Call your insurance CO. and ask them if a 90 will work for them. I call Progressive and they said no problems with a 120. However I replaced and reinforced for the day I buy one. ;)

If you go with the homebuilt formula you get 120 hp as an answer also.

I was told by the local boat dealer (I trust this dealer) That if you put any new 90 you will know it! As a new 90 has 20% more power at the prop than the 85.

From what I have read the boat at sea level runs 35-37 mph with a 17 pich prop @5200-5500 rpm.

At my altitude I have to drop to a 13 pitch to get 5400 rpm. thats at 30 mph.

The guys with a 90 Evinrude run a 17 pitch prop on that engine but at sea level the run a 21.

My guess is I would see 40 mph with a new Evinrude 90 and a 17 pitch prop. My guess is very acurate BTW.
I ran the number through a prop slip calculator and is was dead on @ 8% slip. Basically a great hull!
The boat weighs 1400 Lbs. I weighed it! Trailer weighs 598 Lbs.
