New engine

Hey guys, I just installed a new engine in my 27' Bayliner Ceira. While i was timing it I noticed some small bubbles coming from the intake manifold. I guess I spilled some oil there when I filled it. The motor has been hard to time. I know I have to fix this leak but could that be why I'm struggling to get the timing right?<br /><br />Thnx.

Probably off a tooth or two on the distributor gear alignment.

A Vacuum Leak could most certianly be a contributing factor to your problems........

maybe both. I have found the centrifugal advance starts to kick in above 700 to 800 rpm. If the idle is errstic it could be moving the rpm up and down enough to move the timing a bit making it difficult to set. With a recent rebuild though it is also possible to be off a tooth on the distributor or the cam gear timing.

how much is the timing jumping around ?<br /><br />If only by a few degree its most likely the weights or pins the weight go on in the distrib. are worn and the advancement plate is moving around <br /><br />If the timing is jumping all around the balancer then you have ignition crossfire try making sure no plug wires are touching each other to eliminate the wires jumping to each other <br /><br />if that dont fix it get a new distrib cap since it may have carbon tracks in it causing crossfire<br /><br />If timing chain or distrib was off a tooth it would not effect your timing light readings <br /><br />timing the cam (chain ) has nothing to do with the ignition just valve timing<br /><br />the distrib can be dropped in on any tooth as long as the wires are on the right terminals to where #1 was when it was put in which if your getting a timing signal off #1 wire and its in the area of the timing tab then its fine

Cam chain does affect ignition timing in this style engine, the distributor runs off the camshaft and your reading the crank marks. I have seen many engines hard to time( the marks jump around ) caused by exess play in the timing chain

yes if the chain stretches after distrib is set in no matter where you put the timing chain you can still get the distrib to fire at the right time .. granted it wont run but it'l fire at right time
