I'm considering buying a new 90 or 115 HP, 4 stroke engine.
What are the Pros and Cons of the:

YAMAHA

EVINUDE

MERCURY

well Evinrude is a 2 stroke Etec, not a 4 stroke. all are great engines. the 4 strokes have many more moving parts, and a good bit more maintenance. none of the are very user friendly, when doing repairs.

I didn't realize the etec was a 2 stroke.

Both Suzuki and Honda are not recommended in this area by dealers because of poor factory support.

I currently have a 50 HP Evinrude/Suzuki but I'm having a problem I can't get resolved. See:

Other than this problem it appears to be a great engine.

Re: New Engines - Pros & Cons

I recently owned a Mercury 115 4-stroke and felt it was a good and reliable engine. Started and idled well, had excellent fuel economy, and pushed my 17 ft aluminum boat to about 45 MPH. Sold that boat and bought a new one with a Yamaha F150. The Yamaha is considerably quieter than the Mercury despite it?s larger size. I also like the design of some of the components better such as, the oil drain, which is out of sight, yet easily accessible, the built in freshwater flush, and the power tilt and trim, which is a 2 stage with 3 cylinders as compared to the Mercury?s single cylinder design. Now I haven?t looked closely at the Yamaha F115 and don?t know that it has all the features of my F150, but I would compare them closely before laying down my cash. I?m sure overall performance is comparable between the two, but it seems that Yamaha has earned an unbeatable reputation for reliability and longevity.

Jevery, Yamaha seems to be the most popular engine in my area. I'm not sure if a customer preference or if the dealer's push them harder because of higher profit margins, less customer complaints, or actual better quality.

Both Honda & Suzuki are not favored by local dealers because of alleged or actual poor factory support.

Thanks for your feedback.

I think people buy Yamahas for their reputation. From what I?ve read and heard from dealership personnel the Yamaha?s come back for warranty repairs much less frequently than other brands. However, I?m not speaking of Honda and Suzuki. I feel that those two manufacturers build a product as good as Yamaha, but haven?t been as successful in building the dealer network that?s necessary for a person to easily find service. I especially like Suzuki?s new SS 250. A lightweight big block engine designed to compete with the 2-strokes for the fast bass boat market.
