New Evinrude DFI tips?

Huron Sr. just traded in his older 45hp Mercury this week for a brand new Evinrude 60hp DFI outboard(he got the dark blue one). No choke, just turn key and go. He likes it so far for its smooth acceleration and it should be real good on fuel economy and environmentally friendly to boot.

Just curious if anyone has any experiences with the DFI technology or any tip or advice regarding this motor?

I'll be on vacation for 10 days next week and we're planning on fishing, skiing, tubing and cruising around to break the motor in:D

Any info or tips are appreciated!

Re: New Evinrude DFI tips?

If not already done, have dealer set motor to use XD100 oil, and never use any other oil. No need to ever decarbonize if you do that plus way lower oil use. For all instructions in owners manual for greasing and winterizing (real simple, 5 minute deal) and all normal operation instructions. Great motors. Don't ever even think about running premix, unless you want a big, ugly paperweight. Alsop, if you have any problems, take the motor to a BRP dealer ... don't mess with it yourself, unless you are fully qualified, and certainly never during the warranty period.

Enjoy a great motor!

Wilde thanks for the advice..I will pass it on to my dad and I'm looking forward to checking out this thing in person.

What hp/year Evinrude do you run? His is the inline 60hp and I'm expecting it to push the 17' Sea Nymph tinny pretty nicely. The boat is rated for a 75 so he's at 80% capacity with a 60.

As for the premix...that won't be a problem:) The reason for purchasing was to simplify the setup and avoid having to mix. We won't have to worry about him tinkering with it either the dealer will be the only one taking the cowling off this one for quite some time. Heck nobody is going to be doing anything to her for at least 3 years according to manufacturer's recommendation:D

Thanks again

Re: New Evinrude DFI tips?

I have a pair of '07 175HP E-Tecs in their third flawless season. Clearly the very best motors I have ever run and supported by a first rate dealer.

They always start in less than a revolution and run at 45o RPM like they're been running for days, even when it's the first start of the season. Zero smoke, very quiet, tons of low end torque, low fuel and oil useage (25 to 30% lower fuel use than the 150 HP Mercs they replaced), no smell, lighter than comparable four stroke motors, etc. I run my boat offshore 75 to 90 NM each way usually and an added benefit is considerably greater range, which is a real safety upgrade.

Wilde- wow that is some setup you're running I'm jealous! Do you run one counter to the other...I've heard that is the way to go with dual outboards.

Glad to hear you've had such great performance from the 'rudes, we are hoping for more of the same for this new one too. Especially nice to hear that you are using that much less fuel- sounds like that is a priority for you too based on how far out you are running.

How big a gas tank do you have? My dad's larger fishing boat is a 24' Seaswirl Striper that has an 80 gallon tank for the 225 Yamaha. I personally think his rig would be perfect with dual 150s similar to your setup. The redundancy is nice in the ocean or a big lake(Huron).

Yes, counter rotating ... keeps a neutral helm. Tanks are 90 and 92 gal. I seldom get into the second tank anymore on an outing. We used to use 110 to 125 gal. every time out, now it's more like 80 to 85 gal.

Re: New Evinrude DFI tips?

Wilde that looks like a good site to keep up on the E-tec information, may dad will appreciate that link:)

He had the 17' out on Lake Huron and she got up to 35mph with the 60hp. He's pretty happy with that speed and he's talking about doing some tubing and skiing while we're up north on vacation next week that should help get the motor broken in and tested.

Thanks for the info

The site is sponsored by an Evinrude dealer, Barnacle Bill's Marine, Delmont, NJ ... they sell a bunch of E-Tecs and are considered a very good dealer around here.
