Played hooky from work today and picked up a new S&W m60 stainless 357 . Got a free hour of range time where I bought it. All I can say is it is one sweet shooting gun. Not near as much recoil as I thought. I plan on dusting off some of the guns and do little more range shooting till this weather gets good enough to fish. The range at my gun club has been empty the last couple times I was there. I figure some one has to use it.

Any body else into shooting? What do you shoot and how often?

Re: New firearm

One of my favorites is a SS .357 S&W L frame. At 25 yds. it will place everything (.38 wadcutters & 158 gr. magnums)pretty much point of aim which is good becase it has a fixed sight.
One of the most potent loads I've found is American Eagle 158gr. soft points. While shooting bowling pins once I had the range officer check my ammo because he didn't think I was shooting required factory ammo. The winchester white box 110 gr HP is a nice shooting load. Not a lot of recoil or noise for following up on the pins.
I haven't been shooting for a while now, but I've been thinking of getting to the range soon. I was oiling up a Springfield .45 the other day & I could tell it wanted to make some noise.

Re: New firearm

I'm planning on shooting my "new" Mosin-Nagant 7.62x54R as soon as ammo comes in! I also have a 1920 .303 Enfield, SKS :) , Colt 45, a few .22's, shotguns, and a .308 Nato Mauser. All nice shooters. I used to have a Taurus 357 that shot real nice as well as a Browning 9mm Hipower w/ attached stock that was real accurate too - damn shame I sold it! Heinz

Re: New firearm

The .357 is one of my favorite pistole of all time. It is truly the round of the guy/gal that wants to go from beginner to expert.
It'll digest everything from the mildest .38 special to the hottest .357s (the 125 gr JHP 357mag is a great self defense round) with ease.
You can spend hours on the range getting expertise with cheap/easy .38s and put a few maggies in the barrel just to keep sharp with the hot stuff.
Its also great gun to learn handloading with. You can start handloading .38s into a gun that easily handles them, and as you get more confident work your way into the .357 maggies....and go from there.
Edit: The S&W is a finely crafted and well made arm, keep handloads well within specs. If you want a long term abuse eater in the 6-gun category then get a Ruger.

Jim I almost went with the ruger sp101. Nice gun. Only thing it was a spurless hammer, not crazy about that.

Flathead,
I'm with you on that one. I like a hammer I can confidently grap with my thumb.
S&Ws are the finest machined 6guns in the business, just be conservative in shooting the hot loads and it'll serve you well for many years. I personally like the Rugers because they are beefy as heck and take the beating, but you have to "refine" them a bit. The S&W is the American Porsche of pistols. That is a fine gun that will do you for years, just don't "play on the edge" with it.

Re: New firearm

My favorite is my S&W model 29 in 44 mag. I used to shoot metallic silhouettes with it so I am very apt at shooting long rang with it.(300yds). I get a kick when I go out with friends plinking and I shoot at targets on the rifle range, really freaks them out!

It is next to impossible to get a license to own a handgun in this Flubbing State! Remember that at election time when you have to choose between John "MASSACHUSETTS" Kerry or George "Packing Heat" Bush!

Your so right Ralph. Gun sales are up. The upcoming election is Part of the reason for my purchase. If Kerry gets in who knows what will happen with the so called "GUN CONTROLL"

Re: New firearm

Took my 5 yr old neice shooting for the first time the other day. She loved it! The little Ruger MKII with wimpy loads were easy for her to handle and not too scary. Obviously unable to hit the broad side of a barn. :) I think it is important for kids to have an understanding of guns if the are both to be safe around them and to not have the innate fear some people have of firearms. They are the ones trying to take away our rights.
Mike

Re: New firearm

I used to shoot alot (almost every day) before I got this damn arthritis. I started at 10 feet (with a .22 revolver) and when I could group well at that distance I would move farther away. I became a very good shot using this methed.I've seen alot of people just wasting ammo and not even knowing where there hitting. To me that is just a waste of time.

Re: New firearm

My first gun I carried as a cop was a "N" framed .357 Highway Patrolman Model 27. Nice shooter with good balance. We used to put spent casing on a branch with the primer side towards us and shoot them off the branches at 75 feet.
Looser bought breakfast.
After that I carried a model 19, .357 that I did a trigger job to.
Then came a model 66 stainless in .357
About that time I switched to an automatic, circa 1985 or so, a S&W 645 .45 caliber.
Nice shooter and it would feed empty casings, never jammed on me. I polished the ramp and throat to it.
Then came a Beretta 96 in .40 caliber and now my current carry, a Glock 27 in .40 caliber or a Mini-Glock in .40 caliber depending on what I doing.
I also carry, depending on the situation, AR-15 or an M-16, Remington 870, or an H&K MP5SD.

Ive owned 2 of those Ruger semi-auto pistols, a Mark I and a Mark II, 4" barrel and a 6 7/8" barrel. I wish I still had them. Sold em when I needed the cash as a young man. I also had a Browning Grade II .22 caliber semi-auto rifle. Great shooting little rifle. It breaks down as the barrel screws off of it. I could put 5 shots into a dime at 100 yards bench rested. My sister in Az has the rifle now, she wont give it back.

Another neat rifle I had was a AR-7 survival rifle. It broke down and the barrel was stored in the buttstock. It also floated. That one went full auto on me. The seer wore out and it would empty a clip of .22's in the blink of an eye. I replaced the worn out part to make it legal.

Guns are like women, once you let one go, it wont come your way again.

Re: New firearm

I shoot on occasion but not nearly enoufgh. I only have three pistols currantly. A ruger .22 competion model and a 30-06 singleshot for hunting and a 45/410 just because I love that gun. I would like to become more proficient with them but pistols have never really been my thing. Oh Ive owned several others, just never really got into the pistols. When I was a kid did a lot of shotgunning but grew away from that also. I just prefer a rifle... got several of them, and prefer to shoot them.

I do kinda wish I had kept my glock though...shot that more than any pistol I ever owned.

Re: New firearm

I need some expertise help in learning to shot a pistol well. I have always done OK but l know I can improve. Long guns have never been a problem. Started shooting trap at about age ten, I was able to whoop the adults in my class at the trap range :D Got into shooting registered birds for a while but the sport got a little too expensive. I still go and shoot some trap every year a few times at a place we shoot under the lights at night. I am really going to give an effort at getting to be a decent shot with the handgun. Might even hire an expert to give me lessons.

Re: New firearm

Flathead, I'm no expert by far but I was taught to grip the pistol with rt hand (for right handed shooters) with a relaxed elbow, then grip your right wrist with your left hand and lock your left elbow. This has worked well for me. I got so I could hit a 9" plate at 75 yards (not feet) just about every time shooting off hand with open sights with my super blackhawk .44 mag. I also found that low volosity(sp) ammo worked the best in that gun.

Re: New firearm

Personally I've never had any luck with revolvers. I prefer variations of the old Colt 1911 (Gov. Issue). I own a Para Ordinance 45 which originally came out with just the lower ends for the Colt 1911 and than began to build the whole gun later. Holds about 14 45's. Flathead being comfortable with the gun you have is half the battle.
