When replacing a mechanical fuel pump does the pump/fuel system have to be primed somehow? I seem to remember having to do this on cars years ago when we use to swap motors around?.its been a while?

thanks!

Just to save the starter, squirt some gas into the carb a couple times to let the pump prime itself.

On my 2.3 I removed the pump and put it on a day or so later empty. It didn't take long to catch up, maybe 3-4 cranks. Same
thing when I put on a new fuel/water separator yesterday. The carb bowl should still have fuel in it to get started.
