First off just like to say hi,new to the forum. My English is not so good since its not my native language.

The boat is a glastron 199 sierra,it was originally fitted with a 3.0l 130hp merc. But was fitted in 2008 with a 4.3lx 175hp merc with raw water cooling. As far as I know the alpha one sterndrive is the original fitted to the boat.

The boat lacks a propeller and and there is play in the steering(cable). My problem is that its in the middle of the winter here, and the boat is stored far away.Since I dont have a trailer and need to rent one the boat has to be ready so that I can put it in water when I pick it up.Putting the prop on and changing the cable doesnt take a lot of work, but I need to have the parts ready.

So what diameter/pitch prop should I get for it?It will be used for water skiing yet also used for alot of cruising.I was thinking about getting the mercury vengeance or other ss prop but im open to suggestions. Also what length steering cable should I get,I was thinking about getting a teleflex no feedback.

Also is there any kits to convert a raw water engine to fresh water?

Re: New glastron owner with some problems

Hi, nice Glastron and set up!
Did the (p/o?) also changed the outdrive with the engine as the 3.0L has a different outdrive gear ratio than it would have with the 4.3 v6 ( 1,81:1)?
This is also important to select the right prop pitch, if the 3.0 o/d is still used with the 4.3L you need a higher P prop and be carefull on the torque.
Id start with a (R/H) 21P s/s, you want the max rpm @4400-4800 for the 4.3L, for more pull a 19P
Raw water is the same as fresh water cooling, do you mean closed cooling?
Dont know the cable length for the 199 but it is printed on the cable (thats in the boat, i know) are you sure the play is the cable and not the steering lever on the o/d? (re torque the 2 bolts every season @55lbs/ft)
For the engine year i need the Mercruiser serial number.
I see no signs that a 3.0L was in there before.
Good luck, Frank

Re: New glastron owner with some problems

The seller didnt know if the outdrive was changed, but assumed they only changed the engine.I quess I have to ask if he can check the ratio along with the engine number.

The boat was purchased in 2008 by two guys who changed the engine, they mounted it wrong and broke a bearing between the engine and outdrive. After that they ran into financial problems and the boat was impounded by the financing company. The engine was not flushed so both new exhaust manifolds and block cracked. After that it was sold to a shop who sold it to the previous owner. The small crack on the block was fixed with epoxy and the manifolds were welded. The bearing was changed and the engine fitted correctly.Oil and water doesnt mix, engine start&runs good and compression is in spec so the engine should be good.Im a bit sceptical about the welded manifolds but only time will tell how they hold up.

There is a mercruiser sticker on the valve cover, you can actually see it in the pic.Does it state the engine model/year?

Yeah I meant closed cooling. This is my first real boat and im not so familiar with boating terms.

Im not sure what causes the play, you can spin the wheel a fair bit before the outdrive starts to turn. Its not spongy there is just alot of play. Can you change the cable when the boat is in the water?

Thank you for your response.
