Been keeping an eye on this forum and finally joined several weeks ago. I must say I've learned alot from reading and searching for different topics.

Right now I'm on the verge of buying a pristine 1997 Bayliner 1702 from an older gentleman who is the original owner. I plan on storing this vessel w/trailer in the garage but I've run into a few roadblocks in terms of measurements and I was hoping someone with the same boat could lend me a hand because I have been all over the internet searching high and low and even on the Bayliner site for specifications.

Here are the measurements of my garage:

21' 2" depth (garage door closed)
6' 11" height (garage door opening)
8' 11" width (garage door opening)

Of course life would be so much easier if I wasn't 4 hours away from the seller and he was actually home and not on vacation for a week, but thats not the case.

I'm pretty damn sure width will be no problem for getting the boat in, but the length from the tip of the tongue with the outboard trimmed down (to save a few inches) might pose a problem and the height (on trailer) might be close too, but that can be adjusted a little with the tongue jack too. I'm also looking into modifying with a fold away tongue which might save my butt also...

Can anyone with the same vessel or very similar lend a quick hand in terms of dimensions ? I really hate to pass up on this vessel!

Thanks! - Mark

Unless youre going to be boating on a lake up in Mass. I wouldn't bother buying a bayliner, theyre hull design isn't great and they are terrible at taking rough water. Its all about the deadrise angle. Can't argue with bayliner prices though, but they're cheap for a reason....

Thanks for the reply! I'm well aware of the issues and name Bayliner has earned throughout the boating community, but this vessel is mainly for my brother who is dead set on a 16'-17' cuddy with o/b motor, and it HAS to fit in the garage.....nothing more, nothing less. Its a royal pain in the butt because the limitations are enormous, due to the fact that he wants such a tiny boat w/cuddy and o/b motor. The boat will be kept on the Cape and probably see VERY light use throughout the year anyways but I understand what you are saying. I will say the boat is in amazing condition and has barely seen use and the price is definitely right!

Can't help you with the dimension issue, but let me tell you not to worry about the Bayliner comments. I hear the same comments having a Sunbird. Not the highest quality supposedly, but I didn't pay the highest price. As a matter of fact, I didn't pay much at all, and we've been having a great time all summer with a nice looking. Hope the Bayliner fits in the garage, and have fun!

I don't think it'll fit. My boat is 18'7" and it takes all of a 24' garage. I am assuming the Bayliner is a 17 footer, so I think at the very least you will have to have a folding tongue.

Mine is also a bowrider and it fits thru my 7' door with only inches to spare. I think the height will be the dealbreaker!

But, having said that, I don't really know. Why don't you call the owner and have him measure it for you?

Thanks for the reply! The owner is on vacation right now so I don't have anyone to give me measurements so that is why I was trying to get some homework done. Also he is an older gentleman so I am trying to tread lightly and not bombard him with measurements and specifications if you know what I mean. I think I'll just have to bite the bullet and go down next week....

Thanks for the replies!

Well, that's a nice package--I've seen them before. BUT: the hull is a couple of inches over 17 foot and the engine sticks out the back a couple then the tongue length--It Aint gunna fit. Foldable tongue? maybe. Width: It will go through the door. Height: Going to be close: Does the CC stand for Cuddy Cabin or Center Console? Around here it is center console. Anyway, if it is a cuddy, you have the hull freeboard, the cuddy height and the windshield height. P.I.T.A. but windshields can be removed.

bayliner has had lots of different hull designs. Some are VERY good at rough water, and are technically deep V semi-displacement hulls. (i'd be willing to bet some have substantially more deadrise than many big name boats.) Some are nearly flat bottom bass boat hulls.

Re: New guy! Bayliner 1702LS CC w/120 Force

Thanks for the replies guys!

I called Bayliner this morning and they send me a PDF which had everything I needed. The length measurement the owner had sent me initially was wrong because he just took a tape measure and wrapped it from prop to tongue instead of a "true" straight length. All is well now and looks like we will clear with ease.

To make life easier I will probably fabricate a pusher attachment for my Gravely Pro16 walk behind tractor which will make maneuvering much easier.

Thanks again everyone and I'll post some pictures up next week!
