Been searching the threads for the last 2 hours to solve my problem.
I got some ideas but would like to directly ask the pros.

Just got a freebie boat

1973 (i believe) evinrude 65hp model 65372 with hydromechanical shift (per the manual).

Engine starts and runs fine in nuetral.
Shifts fine to reverse and prop turns and increases with more throttle.

Prop wont turn when shifting to forward. Cant even hear the little click when shifting forward like i hear when shifting to reverse.

Saw alot of posting reagarding the electromechanical problems...but not much on the hydromechanical.

Please help so i can get in the H20 before summers end.

Thanks,
Chris

Re: New guy help pls

thanks for the reply Sashasdaddy (beautiful dog by the way)

will do after the T-storms pass thru here in Northern IL.

My nieghboor said i should not shift from nuetral when the boat is out of water (im using muffs of course). He said it will race and destroy the engine ?
Is this true ?

Re: New guy help pls

you do not not rev the engine over 1500 rpms. it will not hurt to test the lower unit. not recommend long term, as you forget and lose a knee cap. thanks, Tasha is the best, very dedicated, and loves boat riding. the pic is in one of the boats.

Tadd P, but clutch dogs usually go in gear, but not stay.

What tashasd said, probaby a cable or shift rod adjustment out of whack. Shifting w/o the cable should narrow it down.

Re: New guy help pls

disconnected shift linkage.
Started engine and runs fine,
manually pushed the arm that terminates on the engine. I can still engage reverse.
But still cannot engage forward ????

could my forward gear be shot ??

Should i dissamble the lower unit ?

thanks in advance

Re: New guy help pls

i located the shift rod that runs vertically through the lower unit.

Can i unscrew the bolt that's visible and turn the rod ( i see a stamping next to the rod indicating which way to turn for up).

Regarding the dimension for the long shaft.......where are my measurement refernce points ????

thx much

Re: New guy help pls

Look for a used lower unit from a salvage yard with a decent reputation.

Or try some of these people:

sea-way.com;

outboard-parts.com;

marinepartsoutlet.com;

laingsoutboards.com;

tcoutboard.com;

.You can also check here at the BRP site under "Older/Vintage Products":

Re: New guy help pls

After many days and exhaustive searching for my gears (sierra dosen't make aftermarket for 73 65hp) the lower unit is rebuilt. I was most proud of myself since never attempting this before.

She ran great running with water muffs.

Launched her this morning, warmed up and went out for a run. She accelerated perfect and after 30 secs i started losing power and she shut down. Took off engine cowl and there was a burning smell and some minimal smoke. I Read in a forum that the heads have sensors to shut the engine down and prevent overheating (did not hear the overheat audible). I also read it could be a thermostat problem or power pack ? I even installed a new waterpump kit with the lower unit. The water intakes looked clear and no weeds etc. in the prop.

Any suggestions before i sink her ?? (haa haa jk).

thanks in advance,
Chris

Re: New guy help pls

On that year, the heads have sensors to sound the alarm and that's all. Did you test the alarm?

Time for compression and spark checks. Look for any discoloration of paint near the heads. Probably a good idea to re-torque the head bolts too if you think this was an overheat.

Re: New guy help pls

Are you sure you got the pump outlet tube in the pump body when going back together? Sounds like you had zero cooling.
